List of British Grants of Arms
April 2005,
revised April 2009

This is a list of English, Scottish, and Irish grants of arms to South Africans since 1837. Most of the information comes from second-hand sources, so the list is by no means complete. Any additions and corrections will be most welcome.

As far as personal arms are concerned, I have listed only those which were granted to people living in South Africa, and not those which already existed and were merely transplanted to this country by settlers, or those where I am unsure whether or not the grantee was a resident at the time of the grant.

Likewise, as far as the arms of institutions are concerned, I have not included those which were granted to institutions in the UK and later borne in South Africa (and, in some cases, registered here) by their local branches.

Notes
1. Unless otherwise stated, the arms were granted by the English kings of arms, by means of Letters Patent.

2. Arms marked * were registered at the Department of the Interior (1935-59), the Department of Education, Arts & Sciences (1959-63), or the Bureau of Heraldry (1963- ), and the full blazons can be found on the Bureau's database.

3. "Confirmation": in Ireland, where many arms were assumed and borne without being registered, an armiger who could prove that arms had been borne in his family for at least 3 generations/100 years could obtain official confirmation of them from the Ulster Office.

4. "Matriculation": in Scotland, re-registration of paternal/ancestral arms in one's own name, usually with differencing.

5. "Posthumous grant": in Scotland, one can apply for arms to be granted to a deceased ancestor, so that living and future descendants can matriculate the arms in their own names.

6. "Royal Licence": authorisation to adopt someone else's arms (and, usually, the surname too) in addition to, or instead of, one's existing arms/surname. In the case of the University of the Cape of Good Hope, the licence apparently applied to the use of a royal badge as part of the design.

7. Dates are in DD.MM.CCYY format.
