Heimdall guards the gate to the underworld. HAGALL is said to represent the modern Hallowe'en. The Rune of the gambler. Representing the unconscious mind. Associated with the Nine Worlds, hence, the number 9. HAGALL is the cosmic ice-egg that is filled with crystallized magical power & cosmic power. The hailstone represents the rime "egg" of Ymir, the rime giant formed in the junction between Musphelheim I Niflheim. This Rune represents ongoing evolution within a fixed framework. The "mother Rune" associated with completeness. Understand that living in the material universe imposes certain limitations upon you; learn this & you will be happy. HAGALL represents all events, good & bad, that lie outside of one's control. An impersonal force. A disruptive natural event: sickness, birth of death. In the Gate of Heaven runecast, this occurs in the month of the forcast, or the whole year (if in the central position.) Or, the querent's fate may be in the hands of another person or committee. May indicate indirect receipt of news. Life is a gamble; physical fertility (Depending on how it is paired.)

NEID is a two-pronged concept: it contains both the idea of distress & deliverance from that distress. It relates to Fate not as the shaping power itself, but as resistance, which is necessary for its operation. In another Old English Rune Poem" "Need constricts the heart/ too' to the bairns of men it often becomes/ help & health nevertheless, if they heed it in time." The self-created fire; the well-directed action which may, with knowledge & wisdom, act as the counterforce to the oft-negative power of the Fates. Guido von List writes: "Use thy destiny! Do not strive against it!" NEID also represents the concept of stepping forth into manifestation. The creation of the Norns led to resistance being born into the universe, setting the laws of causation into action, and eventually sowing the seeds of destruction (not necessarily a bad thing.) This Rune is used in both Icelandic love magic and in protective charms.

Divination: Saturn as "old Father Time." Represents patience, endurance & caution, therefore advises the querent to have patience & "make haste slowly." Events must work themselves in their own time. NEID produces delay, constraint, limitation, oppression, affliction, ill-health, or lack (of vitality, money or resources.) This Rune can indicate a chronic illness or a long-standing problem. With positive Runes this might be soon to be solved, cured or alleviated. Since it signifies "lack" it may warn of a shortage in the near future. Implies not moving ahead; staying put, maintaining the status-quo. Not a particularly lucky Rune for love matters. Querent or relation may be driven by emotional needs, sometimes, but not always, connected with romance. NEID reversed: Querent may be taking action against advice, cautions of others; against conscious---will lead to degradation & ruin. When paired with WYRD or JARA it often indicates a past mistake for which reparation must be made. He may have gained, and now myst repay; not necessarily to the wronged person in kind, but in some other circumstances of life, or thorough anguish caused by a third party. Being treated as one has treated others. Or: paying one's debt to society. The querent should be advised to be cautious. If he doesn't take this advice, some outside agency: Fate (WYRD) an act of god (HAGALL) or human justice (JARA) may step in.
