Heart & Soul

Episode 1.11

By Allan Craig

Oakridge International Airport
Will waved. The woman walked closer and hugged Will.

“I told you I’d be here.” she said.

“Welcome back, mom.” Will responded.

“You’ve grown.” Alexandra Abbot looked her son up and down.

“Well, it’s been a while since the last time you saw me.”

“Two years, three months and twelve days.”

“You counted?”

“It was just after your college graduation.”

“When you walked out you mean.”

“Let’s not go into that,” Alexandra bowed her head, took a break and looked up again, “I want to visit my daughter.”

Oakridge General Hospital
Kim ran her fingers over a helpless Ashley’s forehead.

“That’s where the crown would go, if you had won” Kim giggled, “But you didn’t win, did you? See that’s the difference between you and me, Ash, I take what I want. And after tonight, I’ll be crowned Miss Oakridge, and you, well, you’ll be lying here, brain-dead.”

Kim smirked as she picked up her bag and left the room.

The Wilson House: Gillian’s Room
Gillian sat in her bedroom. As she looked out of the window, there was a knock at the door. Gillian jumped.

“Who is it?” she asked.

“It’s just me honey.” her mother’s voice came from the other side of the door.

“Come in.”

The door opened and in came Anna carrying a tray.

“I made you some chicken soup honey, it used to always make you feel better when you were little.”

“But I’m not little anymore mom, am I?”

“No honey, you're not. Listen, I cant pretend to know what you're going through, because I don’t. I can’t say everything will be okay because I don’t know if it will. All I can do is try to make you feel better.”

“I know, mom. I just need some alone time to think things over.”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know, like whether I still want to become a doctor.”

“Honey, it’s been your dream since you were little.”

“Yeah, well right now, it’s a nightmare.”

Carrie’s Car
Carrie and Jessica sat in Carrie’s car on their way back from the bank.

“I cant believe it, I’m finally going to get Diane off my back.” Carrie squealed, keeping her eyes on the road.

“I wouldn’t count on it, Car’, even if Megan does come back, it doesn’t mean that everything will be hunky dory. For all you know, Diane could turn her back on Megan. She left town for a reason, you know.”

“Yes I know that, but it’s a chance I’m going to take. If it works, then Greg and I can leave Oakridge. If it doesn’t, then I’ll have to come up with something else, wont I?”

“Have you even asked Greg how he feels about all of this?”

Carrie turned up the volume on the radio.

Will’s Car
“Where are you staying, mom?” asked Will.

“I hadn't gotten round to that yet. Do you think your father would mind if-”

“You’ve got to be kidding!”

“I don’t get the lease to my apartment for another week.”

“I don’t think dad would be too keen on it.”

“Please.”

“I’ll try my best mom, but I’m not promising anything.” Will sighed.

“Thanks honey.”

Oakridge General Hospital
Wesley walked back into Ashley’s hospital room and sat down on the chair.

“Ashley, honey. Are you okay? That girl Kim seemed nice. There’s so much I want to tell you honey, but I cant, you wont hear it.” Wesley leaned in closer, he could feel his daughter’s breath.

The Wilson House: Gillian’s Room
“Gillian Wilson, I cant believe that you’d give up on your dreams because of a bad experience!” Anna folded her arms.

“Yeah well it’s not as simple as that mom. You have no idea what kind of pressure I’m under, now more than ever.”

“Stick at it. If you give up, you’ll be giving that doctor everything he wants.”

“At least I’ll have my dignity.” Gillian opened her bedroom window and felt the breeze on her skin.

“Yeah ‘cause you know that giving up is so dignified.”

“I’m quitting while I’m ahead.”

“Ahead? Gillian, honey, you are not ahead.” Anna replied.

“Mom, this is my life and I’ll do what I want with it.”

“Gillian, ask yourself something. Who is it that gave up the plans for her own beauty salon so that you could go to medical school? Who has to give ton weight housewives pedicures so that you can become a doctor?”

“And I’m grateful for that mom, but this is something I have to do. If I stay at medical school, I’ll end up either totally depressed or suicidal!” Gillian argued.

The Sterling Mansion: Guest House

Carrie closed the door to the guest house. Greg, who was sitting on the sofa, got up and kissed his wife.

“Where have you been all day?” asked Greg.

“I told you earlier, it’s a surprise!”

“A good surprise or a bad surprise?”

“Good. All good.” said Carrie.

“Care to give me a clue?”

“Nope.”

“Come on?”

“My lips are totally sealed,” Carrie mimicked zipping her lips.
Greg wrapped his arms around his wife and started to tickle her.

“Tell me!” Greg laughed.

“No.” Carrie squealed.

Ben’s Apartment
Ben was in his lounge doing sit ups. The telephone rang and he stretched over to pick it up.

Yo…Gina, hi…tonight?…that’s not good, I’m on shift…I know, how about I come by your place later?…you come here then…I’ll leave a key under the doormat, let yourself in…yeah…okay…bye”
Ben smiled as he hung up the phone. He turned himself around and started doing press ups.

Oakridge Theater
Kim Logan walked into the dressing rooms at the Oakridge Theater. She put her makeup bag on a table and hung up her dress.
Lisa walked over to her.

“You're late, Gloria’s having a fit.” said Lisa nervously.

“I had things to do.” Kim shot back icily.

Cassie walked over.

“What did you have to do? Liposuction? Collagen?” her eyes lowered to Kim’s chest, “Implants?”

“Shut it Kane, before you’re spitting teeth.” Kim warned.

“Classy. Good luck anyway, you’ll need it.”

Cassie walked off giggling.

“You better go and see Gloria, she’ll be looking for you,” said Lisa.

“Yeah I will. Any of you touch my stuff and you die, got it?”
Kim walked out.

Josh’s Apartment
Jessica, wearing a long winter coat, knocked on Josh’s door. A few seconds later the door opened.

“Jessica, come in,” Josh stepped aside, letting Jessica walk in. He closed the door, “So, what brings you here?”

“You forgot your shirt,” she said, handing Josh the garment.

“Thanks. I didn’t know it was cold out,” he said, referring to her coat.

“Oh it’s not, it’s very warm actually.”

“Then what’s with the coat?”

“Well,” said Jessica, slowly unbuttoning the jacket, “I couldn’t walk about like this, could I?” Jessica took off the coat to show a revealing, sexy underwear set, “What do you think?”

“Wow!”

Jessica walked closer to Josh and ripped his shirt off.

“You didn’t break any buttons!” said Josh.

“I know,” Jessica threw Josh onto the couch and jumped on top of him.

The Sterling Mansion
John and Diane sat on the sofa of their conservatory.

“What’s wrong honey?” asked Diane.

“Nothing.” John shot back.

“We both know that isn't true.”

“Will you just leave me, Di’.”

“Not until you tell me what’s wrong.”

“I’m serious, will you just leave me be.”

“I’m your wife, I just want to know what’s wrong with you.”

“NOTHING! HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU? NOTHING FOR GOD’S SAKE!” John yelled.

“Jesus Christ, John. Now I definitely know something’s up.”

“Do you really want to know?”

“Yes, of course I do.”

“Fine then, Calinda Whitehead. I killed her.” John said.
Diane was stunned.

The Abbot House
Wes opened the door to his house. Will sat on the sofa in the lounge.

“Hey dad.” Will greeted his father.

“Hi son,” Wesley replied, he looked at the bags sitting in front of him, “Going somewhere?”

“No, we’ve got a guest,” said Will.

“Who?”

The kitchen door opened and Alexandra walked through.

“Alex?” Wesley gasped.

“Hello Wesley.” she replied.
