Heart & Soul

Episode 1.06

By Allan Craig

I’m crazy for you
Gillian dropped the note and it fell to the floor. She picked up the rose, the thorn pricked her finger and a drop of blood spurted out, it dropped to the floor and stained the note.

Pamela’s Apartment
Pamela closed the door to her apartment and turned on the light. The red flashing light on her answering machine grabbed her attention. She sat down on one of her cream leather chairs and pushed the button to hear her messages.

“Hi Pamela, it’s Diane. Just phoning to say that the transfer is ready, all I need is your signature. I can’t say I’m happy about his but it’s your restaurant. Call me back tomorrow morning, I’m guessing you wont get in ‘til late” Diane’s voice came echoing through the answering machine.

The end of message tone sounded and a smile came to Pamela’s face. The Bungalow was finally hers.

Wilson House
Anna blew on her nails, hoping they would dry faster. She glanced at her watch, Gillian would be home soon, and they could go out for lunch to celebrate Anna’s birthday. Anna hadn't received any cards, or presents. She had the feeling that Gillian had a surprise planned, and she couldn’t wait for it. The door opened and a shaken Gillian walked in.

“Hi mom, I’m gonna crash for a while, I’m really tired” she yawned.

“Okay honey” Anna smiled, trying to cover her disappointed tone, and failing miserably.

“Oh and mom”

“Yes?” Anna’s face made it clear she had given up bothering.

“Happy Birthday”

Gillian managed a weak smile before closing her bedroom door.
Once in her bedroom, Gillian took the bloodstained note out of her pocket and read it again.
I’m crazy for you
Quentin, it had to be. He was the only one who had paid her any attention lately. It could have just been a sweet love note, but to Gillian, something wasn’t right. It felt eerie, the blood stained note stared her in the face. She crumpled it up and threw it on her desk. She’d bin it later. Collapsing on her bed, Gillian breathed a sigh. She got up again and changed into her pyjamas before getting under the covers and pulling them over her head.

The
Sterling Mansion: Guest House
Carrie woke up in her bed, next to Greg. It would be cruel to wake him, she thought. She got out of the bed and put on her robe. Looked at herself in the mirror and picked up the hairbrush.

The
Sterling Mansion: Study
John sat at his dark, polished desk., reading an article in the newspaper.

Whitehead Death Investigation Deepens.

“Damn” he thought to himself. The door opened and Diane walked in.

“You're up early” Diane joked, “Not like you, on a Saturday”

“I couldn’t sleep”

“What are you reading?” she was always eager to know what her husband was doing.

“The paper, it says here that Tom Cruise is getting paid $15million for his next movie” John lied, covering up the article about Calinda.

“How very interesting. Well I better get going to the bank”

“Why?”

“Pamela Lockwood wants to buy out my share of The Bungalow” Diane spoke like it wasn’t a big thing, of course to Diane, it wasn’t.

“And you're going to give it to her?”

“Why not? What do I want with a restaurant?” Diane shrugged.

Wilson House
Gillian woke up in her bedroom.

I’m crazy for you

She couldn’t get it out of her head. She got out of her bed and put on her robe. The note lay opened on her desk, bloodstained.
She picked it up and ripped it into pieces. She threw it into her bin, but she had the feeling that it wasn’t going to go away that easy.

Outside Oakridge Bank
Pamela got into her car and started the engine. She was grinning from ear to ear.

“The Bungalow is all mine” she smiled. She put her foot down and drove away from the bank.

Diane got into her car and started the engine. She checked her make up in the mirror.
“Now, Carrie, I think we need a chat” she smirked. She put her foot down and drove away from the bank..

Oakridge Auditorium

Ashley sat on the stage with the fellow beauty contestants. The contest was tomorrow night. Lisa Smith, a contestant, walked over to Ashley.

“Nervous yet?” asked Lisa, handing Ashley a drink.

“Just a bit” Ashley replied jokingly, “Have you sorted your outfit out yet?”

Kinda, my mom wants me to wear this really boring dress, it’s just salmon pink and really dated looking. She calls it ‘timeless’. I bought this really black sparkly one from that fancy store in the mall. She wants me to take it back”

“Designer knock off, was it?” interrupted Cassie Kane, her sharp tongue made her stand out.

“What do you want?” sneered Ashley.
“Nothing from the likes of you” Cassie responded with contempt.

The auditorium door opened and Cassie’s mother, Lily, walked into the room.

“I’ve asked Ms. Kane here tonight to give you all a few pointers for tomorrow night” said the pageant organizer, Mrs. Barnes.

“Thank you Mrs. Barnes” Lily, who shared the same English accent as her daughter, spoke as if she were giving a presentation “Now ladies, first we’re going to talk about posture”

Wilson House
Anna opened a drawer in her bedside table and pulled out an old card from Mike. It had gold lettering, and it read
Happy Birthday Darling
She opened it, Mike had written a message inside.
Anna, Happy 35th, here’s to a lifetime together
She ran her fingers over the card, it still smelt of his Old Spice. She remembered back to the night she got that card…

Anna sat on the sofa with Gillian. They were waiting to go out for dinner. Mike would be home soon. There was a knock at the door, and Anna got up to get it.

“Forgot your keys again?” she said. She opened the door to see Danny, Mike’s partner, standing in front of her.

“I’m really sorry, Anna” he said.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“There was a hold up at the bank, Mike tried to help a woman with a kid and one of the robbers shot at him. He died instantly”

Anna closed the card and put it back into her drawer when Gillian walked into the room.

“Feeling better sweetheart?” although Gillian was fully grown, Anna was still very maternal.

“Yeah, you ready to go?” Gillian replied, not letting her situation put a damper on her mother’s birthday.

“Yep, where do you want to go?” Anna always put herself second.

“It’s your birthday. And it’s my treat. You pick”

“How about The Bungalow?” Anna suggested.

“Sounds good to me”

Parking Lot
Ashley walked out of the auditorium. She walked over to her jeep and started to open the door. She dropped her keys and bent down to pick them up. When she stood up, Kim Logan stood in front of her.

“Abbot” Kim spoke like a sport coach.

“Hi Kim, want a lift?” Ashley replied.

“No thanks, I’m just giving you advanced warning. I’m gonna do whatever it takes to win this pageant, so do yourself a favour, don’t turn up tomorrow night, if you know what’s good for you”
