Heart & Soul

Episode 1.01

By Allan Craig

Oakridge Main Street
Calinda sat in her convertible with the top up, watching as John Sterling stepped out of his office building and quickly ran across the street and jumped into her car, being careful not to get noticed.

“Let’s go” said John.

Calinda turned the key and pushed the pedal down. They sped off into the distance.
As they turned the corner into another street, Diane Sterling sat in her car, watching them. She turned on the engine and followed them.

Oakridge High School
Ashley sat on the big stone steps outside Oakridge High. Her boyfriend, Nick, walked over and sat down next to her.

“Hey” said Nick, kissing Ashley on the cheek.

“Hi” Ashley replied, “You hungry?” she continued.

“Kinda, wanna go down to Java and get something?”

“Yeah, I’ll drive” said Ashley.

They walked over to the student parking lot and got into Ashley’s convertible jeep.

“What CD?” asked Ashley.

“Lets see, how about Pink?”

“You got it. Let’s get this party started”

Ashley popped the CD into the slot and turned up the volume as she drove her car out of the parking lot and onto the main road.

Oakridge General Hospital
Ben and Gillian stood behind the reception desk.

“I can’t believe we got stuck on reception duty today” Ben moaned.

“I know what you mean. I signed up for hands on experience to help me get a better grade in
Med. School, not doing Admin. duties” Gillian replied.
Nathan Fitch walked out from the elevator.

“Hey guys” he smiled, looking up from his newspaper.

“Hi” Gillian replied.

“What's up?” Ben added.

“Well, there’s been a bus crash so prepare for casualties” he calmly explained, acting like it no big deal.

“What should we do?” asked Gillian.

“Just go to the staff rooms and canteen and tell everyone that they need to be ready”

“I’m  on it” said Gillian, walking out from behind the desk and down the corridor.

The Sterling Mansion: Guest House
Carrie and Jessica sat on the comfy sofa sipping coffee.
“So, where’s that husband of yours today?” asked Jessica.

“At work, I don’t know why, I mean, his parents have got enough money” Carrie replied

“Well, maybe he doesn’t like taking his parents’ charity. Maybe he wants to be independent”

“Then why do we live in the guest house of their mansion?”

“It’s one of those things, anyway, you wanna go get a drink?”

“Sure” the thought of alcohol perked Carrie up.

Anna and Gillian's House
Anna sat in her bedroom looking through a photo album. She came to a photo of her with her husband, Mike, and her daughter, Gillian, when Gillian was a baby. Of course, things had changed since then. Mike had died and Gillian was all grown up. Anna’s cellphone rang. She picked it up.

“Hello, Beauty by Anna…yes…I have an opening right now…okay…I’ll be right over…bye”

Anna hung up the phone and picked up her supplies bag. She got up and walked out the room. The photo of her, Mike and Gillian flew off the page by the draft and fell under her bed.

AD Graphics
Josh and Will sit in their office.

“I’m so bored” said Josh.

“Tell me about it” Will replied.

“We really should get started on the Castle Stores project, shouldn’t we?”

“Yeah, but I really can’t be bothered. See, that’s the perk of running your own business, you don’t have to do things that you cant be bothered doing”

“Well, I’m gonna start it”

“I’ll go to the newspaper and put the ad in. Okay?”

“Sure”

Jazz & Co.
Jessica and Carrie sat in the elegant bar. Greg walked in and proceeded to where Jessica and Carrie sat. He kissed Carrie on the cheek.

“You made it” said Carrie.

“Yeah, sorry I took ages, traffic” Greg replied.

“I better go, leave you two lovebirds alone” Jessica got up from her seat and picked up her handbag.

“Seeya” said Greg.

“Bye Jess” Carrie added.

Calinda's Condo
John and Calinda sat upright in bed, two empty champagne glasses on the bedside table.

“Well, I better go” said John as he buttoned up his shirt, “Diane’ll be wondering where I’ve got to”

“When are you gonna end it with her?” Calinda replied.

“She’s my wife. Give me time, okay? I’ll tell her, but not now, I’ll tell her when the time is right” John tied his shoelace,

“Okay, but make it soon” said Calinda.

“Bye” John kissed Calinda and walked out. He closed the door behind him.

Calinda walked into the bathroom. The room door opened again.

“Forgot something?” said Calinda, walking out of the bathroom, her face dropped. “What are you doing here?”

Someone wrapped their gloved hands around Calinda’s neck and watched as every last breath drained from Calinda’s body and she fell to the ground. The person bent down and took out a makeup compact. They held the mirror over Calinda’s mouth to check if she was breathing before standing up again. The reflection in the mirror became clear, it was Diane. She checked her hair and makeup in the compact before walking out and closing the door.
