Plowing the Field...

Fall 2003

So after getting the tank to the farm, we decided to pick up the plow...its pretty damned heavy and we have to figure out how to get it off the truck.  We back it up to a hill,  pull out the ramp and winch it down....no problem.  We get lucky...this time.

Next we get the thing to the back field and figure out how to lower the blades...Of course Lowry hasn't read the instructions and decides to blaze a trail...the instructions specifically say that if you go too fast the plow will bounce and you can damage it or get hurt yourself.  So what does Lowry do?  He treats plowing like it's a timed event.  Mr. Rambunctious has this thing rocking from side to side like a rocking chair.  I'm surprise the tow arm didn't break.  Be that as it may, he finally gets the hang of it...even though getting him to slow down at doing anything is almost a waste of time.  I'm glad there weren't any farmers around or we would have been the talk of the co-op.  It works really well, but we needed to bush hog first. It got clogged with weeds.  So next time, we'll get farmer brown to bush hog, then we'll disk & plant corn.  Black widow is going to be THE place to turkey & dove hunt when the corn dies.

AFTER REPORT!

The corn hardly grew at all and the "green field" didn't turn out that well.  We need to learn a lot more about plowing, planting, fertilizing and the like.

Spring 2004

We're finally getting the hang of it and we are able to plow much bigger fields.  We planted all sorts of summer crops: Corn (which didn't do well), clover (which came in GREAT), sunflowers (which must have been eaten before they got very big, because we didn't see a one) and a whole bunch of other types of beans, all which were heavily browsed.

Fall 2004

Even better luck!  The fields plow more easily and the grass and other mix that we planted came up GREAT! We're starting to get the hang of it. The green field at Red Clay Hill is MOST improved!
