Forcipate Emerald (Somatochlora forcipata)



Similar species – Delicate Emerald (Somatochlora franklini), Kennedy's Emerald (Somatochlora kennedyi), Incurvate Emerald (Somatochlora incurvata).


Flight season: early June to mid-August.

Population: rare, sole encounter with this species to date.

Length: about 45 mm to 50 mm. Best separated from other similar Somatochlora species by the claspers (males) and ovipostors (females).


Stoco Fen, east of Tweed on East Hungerford Road: relatively little open water compared to a marsh. Wetland supporting sedges, orchids, Bog Labrador Tea, Pitcher Plants and other fen indicator species, trees are mainly Tamarack and Eastern White Cedar.
