Elfin Skimmer (Nannothemis bella)



Flight season: early June to early August.

Population: common where it occurs, but known from only two local habitats to date. Large numbers can be found foraging in the high, dry fields to the north and south of the marsh.

Length: about 20 mm, this is North America's smallest dragonfly.


About 1 km east of Actinolite, a marsh south of Bridgewater Road: a marsh with sedges, rushes, Cattails, and other emergent vegetation, tall grasses and wildflowers along the shoreline and bordered by mixed woodland.

Stoco Fen, east of Tweed on East Hungerford Road: relatively little open water compared to a marsh. Wetland supporting sedges, orchids, Bog Labrador Tea, Pitcher Plants and other fen indicator species, trees are mainly Tamarack and Eastern White Cedar.
