Belted Whiteface (Leucorrhinia proxima)

Similar species – Frosted Whiteface (Leucorrhinia frigida), other Leucorrhinia females.

Flight season: early May to mid-August.

Population: common, apt to be encountered at most local marshes.

Length: about 30 mm to 35 mm. The average Belted Whiteface tends to be a bit longer and more gracile than the Frosted Whiteface. Best separated by the epiprocts and hamules (males) or subgenital plates (females).

Tweed, Ontario, near the intersection of Victoria St. and Spring St: residential and business area.
Immature male Belted Whiteface (Leucorrhinia proxima) – trapped iside a building and released after being photographed. A copy of the dorsal aspect has been annotated regarding the wing venation. Wing vention is usually – but not always – reliable, some individuals have only one row of triple cells, compare to the diagram and notes for the Frosted Whiteface (June 08, 2010).

North of Belleville, Ontario, the boardwalk across the marsh at the H. R. Frink Center: flora and fauna are typical of other local wetlands. Yellow Water Lily, Water Shield and Frogbit are the dominant aquatic plants; emergent vegetation consists of Cattails and various species of graminoids. The boardwalk makes it possible to study areas of the marsh that would normally be inaccessible except by canoe.
Male Belted Whiteface (Leucorrhinia proxima) – as a rule there is some red visible between the wings (July 01, 2012).
