Azure Bluet (Enallagma aspersum)



"Black-type" Bluet – the male's abdomens are predominantly black when viewed from above. This damselfly has large eyespots, particularly the males.


Flight season: mid-June to mid-September.

Population: uncommon, not encountered every year. This damselfly breeds in shallow vegetated ponds and lakes, also in temporary pools. The individuals depicted below were wandering a good distance from suitable habitat.

Length: about 30 mm to 35 mm. The abdominal patterns of this species are unique – S7 is predominantly blue in males, the females have paired blue spots on S7 and S8.


Tweed, Ontario: near a sand-bottomed woodland stream east of town along trans-Canada Trail: small sand bottomed creek as well as some standing or slowly moving water in shady forested areas. Sunlit open spaces are created by the trail. The lagoon is located not far to the north.

East of Tweed, Ontario, along Lakeview Lane, near the trans-Canada Trail and Alexander Street: roadside clearing in shrubbery and woodland supporting tall grasses and wildflowers, a short distance from the Moira River.
