.Part I John McLaughlin, birth... Part II: In A Silent Way, to Start, New York Hello, I'm Sandy Freeze ( a.k.a.:guitalife ), and I've been a fan of guitarist John McLaughlin since spring 1973, when I first heard the Columbia (LP) album "Birds of Fire" by Mahavishnu John McLaughlin And The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Many years, LP's, cassettes, one concert,(by John McLaughlin and the One Truth Band, in Los Angeles 1979) and CD's later ,I'm still a fan. Well, enough about me .

~~Brother John, Brother Carlos~~ ...Before then, he had also become acquainted with the Mexican-born guitarist Carlos Santana, whose U.S.-transplanted talent , honed on the blues forms of America , led a permanent Latin inflence on Rock'n'Roll, with the ever present Latino percussion adding to the rythmnic texture of electric guitar, Bass guitar, keyboard and trap drum kit. Carlos of course could never forget the wild sounds McLaughlin had conjured up with Tony Williams and Larry Young, at "Slugs" a club in New York City, years before. "Mr. Melody" as someone from the Miles Davis camp was to call Carlos, was a restless and adventurous guitarist, whose own bandmates turned him on to Davis and the late John Coltrane. The very un-schooled Santana made his mark under the watchful eye of promoter Bill Graham, who gave the young musician a leg up in the world of concerts performing , with a equal measures of advice and enthusiasm. Santana, the band went through their own tumult in the touring and recording of their tough and tender songs, that allowed Carlos a field of expression, but whose ultimate repetition of themes got a little old fast for him. Meeting John McLaughlin opened the door to the world of 'Trane's music, and a gradual appreciation of other's, like that of India, which McLaughlin himself was exploring. As well, Carlos was tired of the dissipation of energies in the ever-predictable, rock'n'roll lifestyle, the empty heart that came from chasing, tasting ,tossing, was matched by those themes lyrically and musically. He had met Sri Chinmoy, become an adherent of the guru, and took on the name Devadip. John and Carlos, took to playing acoustic guitar in presentations of Chinmoy's philsophy, and then recorded Love, Devotion, and Surrender" with Larry Young , and some members of their own bands. This LP may have had un-hedonistic , selfless themes, but showed Carlos reaching to the music which McLaughlin had both feet in. Coltrane's "Naima" and "A Love Supreme",for example , flow out of acoustic and electric guitars respectively , showing the very lyrical Carlos survived in forgoing the axe' and amp combo. Yet, his blistering bursts of shining tone on electric was dynamic, and sincere. McLaughlin adds the contrast of brilliant, fierce arpeggios against Carlos' melodic intro on "The Life Divine", (tablature here a bit modified).

They toured a bit with this music , but Carlos was reminded by hearing a rootsier blues artist (Elvin Bishop) ,on the road, that simplicity was a bit more his forte. None the less, the awe, that Carlos felt about sitting and playing with McLaughlin, grew into a self-respect for his own skills, inevitably, beyond mere bravado. Their friendship extended to "Flame-Sky" on "WELCOME", a Santana LP. Later, Carlos appeared on a track callled "Friendship", on a McLaughlin LP in 1978.
