The Importance of Libraries
By Zakir Hussain (Librarian)
The importance of libraries in the education and cultural development of a country can hardly be over-emphasized. Libraries have remained into existence since ancient times. However, it was during the medieval age that the Muslim scholars contributed a lot towards its development, the basic source of information being the rich libraries.

Pakistan is a developing country taking strides in various fields from which libraries have found on the top priority because libraries are the only source of knowledge and it lead the nations to the development.

According to encyclopaedia Britannica, libraries are the collection of printed and written materials arranged and researched. Today libraries form an essential part of the chain of human communication and prior to adoption of the process of recording of knowledge.

It is a known fact that, libraries and documentation centres have had important place in our civilization, it is very necessary that the role of libraries should be appreciated on priority basis. These are primarily important reservoirs of knowledge. The libraries are the oldest means of communication of ideas, and in present the term book is used in the general sense as a “DOCUMENT” which includes in its compass the records, journals etc. I would like to advise my friends and students that they should pay their keen interest towards the achievement of knowledge, which is possible with the libraries because libraries are only the repository of knowledge.
