Failure of Democracy in Pakistan

By Nusrat Aijaz ~ LL.B II

In Pakistan since her inception a struggle between forces, which aspire to see Pakistan developed it’s a democratic polity and those who prefer an authoritarian, system has continued to persist. In the past fifty eight years, the Pakistani elite and the political system that we should like to have for the country. During the last fifty eight years we can see that military has intervened the political system of our country. The fault does not lie with the army but it lies in our governmental setup. People still do not understand the meaning of democracy and good governance due to the high rate of illiteracy and lack of political bent of mind. The misrule and the corruption of the “democratically elected rulers” and the repeated intervention of military never allowed the true spirit of democracy to strengthen its roots in Pakistani soil. Before we discuss the cause of the failure of democracy in Pakistan, we must understand the meaning of democracy. It is the wrong conception that the democracy is the western phenomenon, but we find Islam gives us the true explanation. The Holy Quran clearly asks to holy mutual consultation and then take a final decision. And when some decision is reached, we should trust God and stick to the decision. It is our hard luck that non-Muslim adopted the democracy started and introduced by Islam and are ruling the world. We, on the other hand are leading a wretched life on account of internal differences and selfishness.

Having the Islamic interpretation of democracy, we can now go for the causes of the failure of democracy in Pakistan. Let us find some of them:
1. Non- Political culture
2. Corruption
3. Poverty
4. Low rate of literacy
5. Poor role of Judiciary
These are the factors responsible for the failure of democracy in Pakistan.
