Betting

By Urooj Sheikh ~ LL.B II

Betting is the worst form of vice. It is found in all over the world. Gamblers are such type of criminals who can not be reformed easily. By the word, ‘Betting’ and ‘Gambling’ we mean to become the owner of a property by an appeal to chance.

Betting and Gambling are of two different kinds. First kind of betting is by chance or by luck as someone gets money through prize bonds or by tossing a coin. The second kind of betting is called mixed betting, there is an element of skills and fraud included in it. In which someone uses his mental faculties and skills, as playing cards the success depends on skills as well as on fraud. It means to stake something to be lost or won on the basis of fraud. There is either complete or partial gambling in every part of life.

Insurance and investment is itself a kind of betting. If someone insures his life, it means that he is betting his life for an early death. Some people don’t like to play cards unless they are playing for money, if they win they are happy and if they loss they become annoyed. The main cause of betting and gambling is a escape from boredom and monotony of daily life. For a gambler uncertainty and disorder in his life appeals his towards gambling. A gambler’s life is always on stake and he never comes out of it. His life bases on cheating and fraud and he constantly adopts ill-means to succeed in life.

Morally and spiritually it produces adverse effects in our society. If wealth earned through ill-means, such wealth has no sacredness and is squandered away very soon. So the earning of betting and gambling do not last because it is gained without any labour. Gambling is a disease of barbarians superficially civilized and morally degraded literature which becomes a source of excitement and pleasure and the gambler escape away from the world of realism. Betting is an irreclaimable vice so the heavy tax should be imposed on betting and gambling to discourage this vice from our society.
