"Im here for the cop position"

True Crime. A game that has been in development for years, and hyped pretty well, Exspecially on Xbox since Grand Theft Auto was no where in sight, But when GTA was announced a few months back everyone was saying True Crime who? Well some of the hype has left this game but its still a pretty solid affair even if you have Grand Theft Auto.

"Havent I seen you before?"

The comparisons are going to be made, So I mine as well start this review off with ironing them out. Yes this game is somewhat like Grand Theft Auto, But just because this is in the same genre as GTA doesnt make it a clone. Castle Wolfenstein was the first First Person Shooter but just because of that doesnt mean that every FPS that comes out you say its a Wolfenstein clone. So its not fair to call every game that is like GTA a clone. Getaway was a victem of this and now True Crime is also. But anyway, both games feature big cities, carjacking, and lots of killing. But what are the differences? Alot! True Crime is basically three games in one. A driving game, a fighting game, and a shooting game. But of course certain parts arent as good as they should be..

"I'm just too old to do three different things at once!"

Having three different components in a videogame means not as much attention on those components. The driving section of the game is above average but the fighting in the game is just merely ok. Both of those sections could have used much more tune up and attention if not more inovation. But the shooting components of the game are great! Alot of action, music that fits the mood and moves that make the shooting stand with the best of them. Lets start with the driving section. The controls suck. Thats a huge problem with this game. You will Have to change them to even be playable! Once your done fighting with the control adjustment you will start to drive around the city. The graphics are pretty good but the physics are not realistic at all. Driving around the city is easy and when you hit vehicles youll just continue on driving forward as if nothing just smashed into you at over 100 MPH. The cars are mostly average with the random nice sports car thrown in at times. The fun with the driving is the things you can do while driving. You can shoot in all directions, drive on two wheels, use nitro, aim in the FPS type precision aiming while driving and shoot cars tires out and aim for the gas tank within the vehicle and send the other car flying in the air in a fiery explosion, and you can even arrest perps or chase criminals high speed chase style also if you feel like it. A good thing about the driving is the city is huge! The city is based on L.A "duh" and so Luxoflux actually took satelite images of L.A and accurately modeled the city into the game. Every street is in this game and the big buildings are here too! You can drive on what seems like forever in any direction in this game. So the driving part of this game is pretty good, 7/10.

"A fighter? Your more like a chump!"

Now we come to the fighting portain of the game, Right off the bat id like to say its the worst part of the game. In other words I can just say it pretty much sucks, But not quite sucks, but darn close. There are two main times of fighting that takes place in this game. One, when your driving around and get a call that theres a criminal that needs to be introduced to your first (But can just as easily be killed by your guns) and two, when its a story mission and you have to fight, no way around it. When the inevitable time comes when you have to brawl there are two types of fights. One the slightly fun ones where there are many enemies and also many items to beat them into and with. But theres a darker, more evil fight. The one on one boss type fights, The most boring unfair fights in a videogame ever. Lets start with the more fun multiple enemy fights. In the begining of the game you start with average moves. But while the game goes on you can spend badges(the currency in the game) to train in different skills driving, fighting and shooting. If you train in fighting you will get different manuevers to use to dispatch foes, and it also makes you stronger when you battle. You will need to upgrade if you want to win in the unfair boss battles. When you fight multiple enemies the battles can be pretty decent. Why? Because even with the average set of moves you get you can still kick ass, So the fights are more fair, the enemies arent strong but there not easy to beat either. And the environments you destroy during these battles are pretty good too. Most fights with enemies have many objects to wich you can send the enemies flying into. Be it tables, stools, ovens, steroes anything. Plus you can wield knives, swords and other nifty tools to slice your oppenents with. Now lets get to the cheating bastards they call bosses. In these fights you will really notice the fighting sections problems. You can be punching and kicking right through your oppenent and not even hit him, but he can be hitting you perfectly. And the grapple system sucks. If you want to pick up your oppenent and do some sort of move you basically have to wait untill there stunned or you will just look stupid standing still with your hand raised while your getting kicked in the face. In these fights the enemy is always alot more stronger then you and two hits your health with be almost halfway down already, but there health goes down like mollases. In every fight you will find yourself hitting the same two buttons over and over, punch and kick and in mostly every fight thats all you need to win. Very repetitive and boring the fighting system is glitchy and not what it could have been. 5/10

"Damn! You kick ass with a gun"

Alright now on to the shooting portain of the game. This part of the game is extremely fun and nicely done. You can tell the most effort went into this part of the game, the graphics are good, the music fits the mood, and the controls are solid. The enemy AI might not be to bright but that doesnt matter its still enjoyable. This section is like Dead To Rights by Namco, if you have played that game then just picture that but better. You can hold two weapons of any type in your hands, you can take enemys and make them your human shield, you can dive in any direction in bullet time, you can take cover behind objects or walls, and you can aim in precision mode. Also the environments are always good to have gun battles in, most are close indoor environments like warehouses and spas. Most of the environments are also destructable with pillars breaking apart and other objects shattering to splinters from bullets. These parts of the game make you smile and wish there were more of these events, But sadly these sections are short and arent in the game as much as they should be. 9/10

"We know you are capable of killing, But hows your personality?"

True Crimes graphics are pretty solid, good draw distance, good player models even the predestrians, the cars look good, both indoor and outdoor environments, and of course the city is huge. Now onto the music, most of the tunes in True Crime are rap and hip hop. I hate both of those. There are a good selection of rock in the game but there mostly only used on the shooting portains of the game(thats why I said up there ^ that the music fits the mood, and also why I enjoy the shooting parts alittle more) the game lets you select wich songs you would like to listen to but even after I unselected all the rap they were still playing! I dont know if this is a problem with my version of the game or a glitch in everyone but I could never get my choice of song to play. The Xbox version has the Custom Soundtrack feature but like the regular music I coudnt even get these to play! So i was stuck listning to the music I didnt want to throughout the whole game. The games story is pretty good, You play as Nick Kang a cop who was suspended due to unconventional methods to stoping crime and is drafted into the E.O.D, Elite Operations Devision there he can do whatever he wants to fight crime. The game also has a good voice cast with actors and actress's like Christopher Walken and Michelle Rodriguez. So theres no complaints in the voice compartment. If the game had more shooting parts and the team had taken more time on fixing up the other parts this could have been a must own. But as it is, it's a pretty good rental.

"Im sorry, You're not what were looking for."
