"Silent Hill 2"
[submitted by ex-ion] As you stand rigidly, too scared to move, in a dirty corridor, seemingly alone, the mist from outside lingering around the decaying scenery around you and bits of broken glass, tainted in blood sticking to your feet, you think you hear a distant scream was it the game? Did you imagine it? Is it happening outside your house? You think about jerking your head to see if it is, but theres the overwhelming fear of leaving your character alone amoung the non-living, hollow walls of Silent hill. You think you see something in the mist; you look closely and see nothing, nothing but the faint tracks of a shuffling creature spreading dubious red liquid, more than likely blood, you want to scream, but nothing has happened, has it? You want to turn off your computer and hide under the duvet in the safety of your bed, but you are no longer in control, Silent hill is.
This is what you are likely to feel in the less eventful, less terrifying sections of the game, but thats not to say the game is purely anticipation, far from it, the puzzles in the game are highly advanced and brain taxing affairs, but never get boring as they always lead you to a blood curdling scenario, or a room which you do not want to enter, not because you tire of it, but because it drives such primal fear into your veins that you cannot bring yourself to even look at the door. The combat in the game is great, with the highly satisfying stick with a nail in it being one of my personal favourite beast slayers there are all kinds of weapons in the game ranging from chainsaws to shotguns, or handguns to hunting rifles more weapons are added upon completing the game!
The story is hugely involving, and youll be hooked after minutes of playing, and youll want to play again and again after finishing! Not least because of the six endings available. The story itself revolves around the middle aged man, James Sunderland as he looks for his wife, Mary, in the town of Silent hill, whats so strange about that you might ask, well, his wife died three years prior to the story! When he arrives he finds the town almost deserted, with the exceptions of the insane (and not in a good way) such as Eddie, the trailer trash, gun crazy teenager who likes killing things, Maria, the intriguing woman who looks the spitting image of James late wife (as well as having a similar name) and a few other disturbed characters. I said youll want to play the game again and again but the chances are you wont as youll be so traumatised that you wont want to even put it in your disk tray but as I also said, you are not in control, Silent hill runs thick in your blood and will make you play again, and you will not argue.
The controls are perfect, theres a resident evil style control method that works really well, even better than Resident evil in fact, as well as there being a metal gear solid style 2d control method. The graphics are slick and amazing, if not disturbing and truly scary and the music and sound effects are truly genius this is a beauty of a game that should be owned by everyone, and now its a budget title as well, featuring new stuff (as it is the directors cut) such as a mode where you play as the female role in the main game, Maria, through a short scenario, it is in fact the x-box version with a few improvements. If you dont already own it then buy it now!
