"Legacy Of Kain: Defiance" [submitted by xboxdude ]

When Eidos released Legacy of Kain years back for the PSOne it was a great RPG and was the beginning of a journey for one of the most memorable characters in videogame history. Later Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver was released which was the story of another great character Raziel, Which is intertwined in Kains story. Both had sequals and now they finally meet for a final time in Legacy Of Kain Defiance.

In Defiance you control both Kain and Raziel on separate paths both looking for answers and trying to defeat there ultimate fate. As is a trademark in the Legacy of Kain games the story is top notch and the voice acting is some of the best in the business. You start the game as Kain and throughout the game you switch between the two, You cant select who you want to play as. Kains levels focus more on action while Raziels are focused more on puzzle solving. As is usual you gain new abilities with the two different characters as you go through the game. The combat engine has been refined from the average combat engine in the previews installments. Combat is more fluid and much more fun this time around, each character wields telekinetic abilities, so your able to toss enemies around easily into other enemies or nicely situated spikes. The combat is fun but can also get stale later on. But thats not much of the problem because the game is fairly short.

This brings us to its faults. The game is short. It can be easily beaten in a few days, its about 13 hours long. Even if youre a big fan you may want to rent this game instead of laying down $50 for it. Another disappointment is the camera. This game goes for a Resident Evil style camera, Its situated at spots and can not be adjusted. This can interfere when fighting enemies since if you go to a certain spot the camera will change and instead of going backwards your now walking right into the enemy. A huge problem is the levels. Both characters have separate journeys but they are also in separate times. So wherever one is the other is in the same spot just at another time. So the levels are the exact same save for a few differences. Not an entirely bad thing, But the games levels tend to get boring and unoriginal.

The games graphics are one thing that wont disappoint. There not the best but there far from bad. The main character models are nicely done and the enemys look good to. The environment detail is also very well done. When Raziel is in the underworld it has a nice (and slightly annoying) blur effect to it which is a nice little touch. The sound in the game is very good with perfect voice acting and nice sound effects. The screams and threats in the Underworld are cool and slightly creepy. Overall the presentation is nice.

The controls are easy to pick up and learn quickly. Basically average adventure game controls. If you are a fan of the Legacy of Kian games then you owe it to yourself to pick up this game (rental or otherwise) the story is great and the game itself is good as well and will hold your attention just long enough to beat.
