[submitted by dancingmind ] jak and Daxter was the most enjoyable game I have played in about a decade.
Think about that statement for a moment. There have been many great games in last few years like the amazing Metal gear series or even the exciting re-invention of gaming thorugh the GTA series. But for pure fun, no game beats Jak and Daxter.
It's the kind of game you can honestly sit back with no cares or pressure and fiddle away with for as long as you want. The GAMEPLAY is PERFECT. Never have I played a more comfortable game. Every animation was created to flow seamlessly from one move to the next so you can control Jak to do anything without having to wait for his animation sequence to end. That's a big deal if you think about all the games that have your character finishing an animation while you get clobberd by enemies.
Speaking of animation, Jak and Daxter is classic animation done beautifully. It's nice to finally see some cutscenes where they are actually lip synching the English. And even better the cutscenes (along with everything in the game) never requires a loading screen. Naughty Dog is my new hero for designing Playstation games. The game is beautiful to look at (great level design!), plays perfectly, and doesn't stutter below 60 fps ever. If only every game developer knew these skills!
Of course all games have some downfalls, and Jak and Dax suffers from a messy camera. Still after a few hours you can actually learn how to control the camera yourself and cheap deaths don't happen as frequently. Plus you have infinite lives in the game so deaths aren't really a big deal. A little easy? Maybe, but the idea here is to have fun playing a videogame, and Jak and Daxter accomplishes that perfectly.
