"Eyetoy"
[submitted by ex-ion ] A while back I had the privelage to use an early model of the eyetoy in the GAME ON exhibit last year and unarguably, I was suitably impressed!
How could they possibly better this I thought to myself, This is how!
The newly released eye toy features twelve ingeneous games ranging from the frantic kung fu to the fantastic wishi washi. Gone are the days where you control a predesigned character with a clumsy control pad, now YOU are the character and YOU are the pad!
Never before has looking like a complete prat been so fun! Off screen you wave your hands like a ninny trying to interact with the on-screen mayhem giving a similar sence of embarasment as using a dance mat.
The graphics that are used alongside your image that is prejected onscreen are smooth and accurate, (albiet a bit basic) And work perfectly with this game, as do the sounds with the exception of the voices which are all provided by the london based team behind eyetoy which can get irritating after a while (if I hear "You turned 'im into scrap metal, well done!" once more I swear I'm going to hit that guy!).
It's very possible to cheat in the game by just wobbling the camera to win games but that is a pointless activity and ruins the fun, but its good to know that should you be rubbish at the games and be desperate to top the score boards you can do it with relative eaze.
To really appreciate the eye toy you need to gather your friends around and take it in turns to try and top each others scores, its guaranteed laughs! A great feature to do with this is you can always tell who holds the champion title as the holder of the high score position gets their photo taken to be displayed until defeated.
Games arent the only of this nifty lttle device either:
The eye toy features a section called "the playroom" where you can mess around with effects such as a bee hive where you get attacked by bees if you hit heir hive, a web where spiders are attracted to your movement and a gnarly looking Jimmy Hendrix style psychadelic rainbow effect where you get a "trippy-vision" style haze accross the screen, as well as many other great things, it also features a video messaging system where you can record short messages and save them to your memory card which could have several entertaining uses.
Other features such as web-cam and placing your face on game characters have been suggested by Sony and should be available soon so this great piece of revolutionary hardware is not ging to fade out after a few months, it's said to be the piece which will provide the center of the PS2's expandable network.
EX-ION'S RATING:
sound: great effects and music but the voices are slightly irritating (3/5)
Graphics: not the most complex but they suit this game perfectly! a few more effects would have been nice though (5/5)
Controls: revolutionary to say the least, but awkward at first (5/5)
Gameplay: sheer brilliance, its hard to top this! (5/5)
Longivity: huge possibilities for expansion (5/5)
Overall: Worthy of everyones money! buy it now! (5/5)
A Second Opinion:
