"Beyond Good, But Flawed"
[submitted by dancingmind ] I have never played any other games that Michel Ancel has made (namely the Rayman series among others), but i am starting to see the big hype behind his mind. I haven't seen such imaginiation in a game since Shigoru Miyamoto's early NES days (Super Mario Bros, Metroid, Zelda, etc).
Beyond Good and Evil is a total immersive experience. It has very nice graphics and a wonderful story..... but put all that aside for a moment. That is all game talk. This 'game' is arguably something very different. It offers an experience not felt in other recent games. The world in BG & E is so magnificently detailed you would be forgiven to confuse it with virtual reality. It never feels like you are playing mission based gameplay because everything feels seamless and strangely real. With radio stations buzzing idly in the background and characters having conversations with each other, the player starts to feel like they've stumbled into a real world.
One of the greatest things about the game is the camera. Anyone who played Pokemon snap on the N64 will remember the possible potential the game could have had. This game takes that element, without the cheese or repetitive gameplay. The camera single handedly makes the world extra real to you. By taking pictures of wildlife acroos the mystical world you are almost forced to take in all the beauty and little touches that make the game more of an experience.
Now let's talk about it as a game. Unfortunately here's where a couple of BG & E's faults lie. For one, the controls are really bizarre. One button is pretty much responsioble for every action (ie. jump, attack, touch switch). This makes things especially difficult because the game has to decide when you are allowed to attack or when you are allowed to touch a switch to escape from certain death. There are a lot of buttons on todays controllers. I think it could have been handled better.
Secondly the framerate (frames per second or FPS) slows down frequently in the game, especially when using the camera. These are the kind of issues that can totally ruin an average game, but BG & E is still a very enjoyable experience! This is the kind of game that sticks in your head while you are at work, school, or in an intamate moment. It really gets in your head!
It is sad to see a game with such enormous potential suffer from horrible glitches. Plus, it doesn't look like enough gamers are interested in supporting the game so no improoved sequel may ever be made. I would highly recommend that people give this game a chance (and save often in case you get stuck from glitch problems).
I recommend BG & E for anyone looking for a whole new gaming experience.
A Second Opinion:

(I liked Jade's original outfit design better than her new 'xbox green' outfit.)
