Medium-sized level, off-grid, random and weird texturing, somewhat randomly designed, bad architecture, alright but-of-the-somewhat-pointless action. Totally skippable. 2/5
Fort Knocks PWAD (11FORTKO.WAD)
Guy Stockie October 10, 1994
FunDuke (the uploader) notes that this is fairly large for a 1994 WAD, but hes nuts; its actually somewhat small. At any rate, this actually turned out to be pretty fun. Its basically your typical fort WAD, but the architecture is better than average and the action is pretty good too, though a bit much health. Most importantly, the level design is good and fun; texturing is mostly GSTONE gets infested by technology with the usual randomness. Overall, pretty fun, and given its size, worth a quick romp through. 3.5/5

Dan Buckley July 20, 1994
Large, open, bad, architecture; too little ammo and health for the first half; horribly aligned and very random texturing: typical first level. Still, its not as bad as a lot of other first levels out there, and I did make me go, Heh, in a few spots. But, unless you really have nothing to do, you should probably just skip it. 2/5
2BAD
Tom Petrillo October 4, 1994
I believe Ive played this before. This is a smallish E1 level, with a consistent GSTONE/GRAY texturing, which is a little boring as a result. Design is wide and architecture is somewhat interesting. Action is pretty good, with lots of snipers. Nostalgia hunters should enjoy this. 3/5
Two PWADs: DKS-E1L1.WAD and DKS-E1L3.WAD (2Wad.wad)
August 11, 1994
Both these levels pretty much suck. The first has *totally* random structure, terrible texturing, unmarked doors, and rows of powerups. The second has better structure, but the texturing is still random, and now instead of rows of powerups theres rows of enemies. Pass. Definitely. 1/5
3RipnWAD
August 1994
This actually has three WADs by three brothers. So .  . .
IB2TUF4U
Ror
This is a pretty neat smallish level. The texturing is random, but the architecture is pretty good. Action is good as well, though theres too much health and ammo. Theres also a lot of secrets; unfortunately a lot of them are pretty impossible to find. Do yourself a favor and give yourself the allmap so you can have some fun. (Dont feel too bad; its in one of the first secrets anyway.) Definitely a fun little level. 3.5/5
UBSCRWD
Jim
This is a small, mostly wood-textured level. Unfortunately the texturing still has silly errors. Architecture is okay, though theres some trigger oddity. Action is okay; too much ammo though. 3/5
LOOKOUT
Chris
This is a very random smallish-medium level with random (though not always terrible) texturing and practically no architecture. Action is pretty easy due to the orgy of ammo. At first, its kinda amusing for the wtf factor, but that fades soon enough. Pass. 2/5
303 Sucks! (303Sux2.wad)
Calypso August 1, 1994
Heyyy Ive played these two levels before somewhere in the Maximum files. Funny how they suck just as much now. The first spells out 303 SUCKS and has three Cyberdemons in close quarters at the end; random texturing. The second is a short little area with alcoves and a Spidey. Fin. And ew. 1/5
3WAYS
Neil Riehle November 1996
This level starts off with on a raised platform with lava on the sides. You have three ways to go, which are illuminated as you walk through them; a nice touch in the dark room. The three paths lead to a dungeon, a base, and a house. The detail is lacking so it looks like what its supposed to be only in that old-school way; texturing is pretty damn random and there were enough misalignments to annoy even me. Action is alright. Fans of offbeat design might like it (its a little on the small side), everyone else can probably just pass. 3/5
Another Awsome DOOM PWAD (E2M1) (AA21Doom.wad)
May 6, 1995
I was pretty worried just from the title, and of course, I was right. Large, open, bad off-grid architecture; random, bad, misaligned texturing; mediocre action. It includes some of those sounds floating around on the net back then that stopped being cool a long time ago. Absolutely nothing redeeming about this WAD. 1/5
Another Awsome DOOM PWAD (E2M2) (AA22Doom.wad)
May 15, 1994
The level design here is so far above the other Awsome WAD its not even funny. Sadly, its still not particularly good. The level is fairly small, made up of a bunch of marble areas connected to each other. Action is alright. Sadly, I couldnt help escape the feeling that every area Id already seen in other levels. Fairly derivative. Also, I got stuck and didnt have the patience to find that damn yellow key. So, fans of offbeat design  might like it, but otherwise: 2/5
Aarrghh!
Oleg Tolstkhine June 9, 1994
So we have here an E1 replacement, except it only actually replaces four levels. Levels 4-7 are just placeholders. The first level is mostly a bunch of teleporter links transporting you to rooms often large and open, but on the whole lacking in the architecture department. Texturing is pretty mediocre throughout the whole thing. The second is the best of the bunch. Architcture is still too open, but it has some good points, including some nice nifty teleporting enemies, a barrel trick which even I thought was kinda cool (must have been playing barrel2.wad), and a few classic E1-style moments. The secret level sucks; it is rather difficult with no real reward. The final level is a typical small ending level, but it serves its purpose. Action is fairly tough throughout. For E1M2, 3.5/5, but for the whole thing, only 3/5. If you do choose to play it, skip the secret level.
Crossing Acheron 1.666 (Acheron6.wad) Dr. Sleep September 22, 1994
I believe this is the version of
Crossing Acheron that was included in the Maximum files. (It was included in a multi-WAD pack though, so Acheron.wad never appeared in that compilation.) Its pretty much the same as the original version above, except theres a few minor areas tacked on, and theres some fast-open Doom 2 doors. Nothing major though, so I guess this could be considered the definitive version of the level. By the way, the first time I ever played it, this level was set to E3M7 (due to the wad pack). That gives it Waltz of the Demons for music, and the Hell sky from E3. This is definitively the best way to experience this level, as it adds tons of atmosphere to it. */5
My First Adeventure (Adv1.wad)
Phillip S. Pittz June 11, 1994
This is one of those throw the player into a huge haphazardly designed area and throw
tons of monsters at him WADs. Utterly passable.
1/5
Akce Korian (Akce.wad)
Martin Duke Miejovsky July 18, 2001
This is an eight-level set composed of small-to-very small levels. The first two levels are meh, but after that the design picks up quite a bit. There are some neat locales, like a dam, mines, subway, living quarters for whatever lived in the area, I guess . . . however architecture on the whole is a little lacking, and moments of cool detail are sparse, which keeps it from being truly great. Action is tough for the most part, aside from the final fight. (The whole final level is a bit of anti-climax, truth be told.) I had a fun little romp, but unless youre a fan of offbeat design, youll probably want to skip it. 3/5
Alcatraz (Alcatrz2.wad)
Booby Fosnot July 10, 1994
Alcatraz? Hardly. Overly large, off-grid level design, action thats probably a bit tough if you dont find the ridiculously overstocked secret room, bad texturing . . . but for some reason, I got a slight kick from the classically bad design of it. Nostalgia hunters might want to check it out, as its probably just small enough to be worth it for ya. 2/5
DOOMED to Run Amok v1.1 (Amok11t.wad)
David L. Davis August 30, 1994
This WAD is by the author of DM1toDM2, which makes for interesting trivia. At any rate, its pretty good. Design is a little off-grid and texturing is random, but on the whole it looks pretty good, and even has some genuinely neat touches thrown in. It also includes some new textures, which arent bad at all, besides the frozen FWATER flat. But most notably, this WAD is jam-packed with monsters. I havent seen this much ass-kicking crammed in since Aurora1.wad. Finally, it contains a new music file that I was going to use in my totally incomplete third WAD, Biohazard. Its probably one of my favorite pieces of Doom replacement music. So, check it out! 3.5/5
AnyNCE11 (An11.wad)
Owen Robertson June 12, 1994
This is a pretty big level with large, off-grid design and totally random texturing. Despite this, each individual area usually isnt too bad, and it has a few genuinely neat moments. (Especially the second roomId recommend downloading it just for that.) It opens in one of those long Run the Doomguy over a bunch of powerups hallways. But in the end, the action is pretty tough, with health in short supply. This level reminds me of one of those Doom 2 WADs whose sole purpose was to pound you into oblivion with enemies. Overall, it's tough enough and has just enough neat moments (including one of the most dick things Ive ever seen in a Doom WAD) to make it worth checking out. Just as long as you dont hate old-school, somewhat crappy design. By the way, the new music fails, its simply the Hangar music, only with pianos instead of guitars. Har. 3.5/5
A rush of blood to the head (ARush.wad)
Oswaldo``Joaquin Zuniga January 1, 1998
This is supposedly based on the authors house, and if it is, good for him, cause its fairly extensive. It plays better than most house WADs, because youre actually limited in where you can go via keys and switches. Action is also interesting because for the majority of the level you only have a shotgun; theres a good fight at the end, too. But on the whole the architecture is nothing special, and neither is the level. Enjoyable, but not really memorable; only if you really like house WADs I guess. 3.5/5
REVENGE OF ASMODEOUS : Episode One - Mission One (Asmo1_1.wad) Marty August 30, 1994
AHA! I finally come face to face with my old enemy. While not quite the WAD I thought it was at first, this damn level was ubiquitous in wad packs in the Maximum files. And I cannot understand why for the life of me. This level is abysmal. It consists mostly of square, boring, STARTAN rooms. The texture set hardly changes; its a classic example of bad E1 style. Action sucks, and theres a maze composed of about 200 two-sided lindefs that slows down my computer and/or crashes it every single time, no matter what time period or era, no matter what computer. I hate this fucking WAD. 1/5
REVENGE OF ASMODEOUS : Episode One - Mission Two (Asmo1_2.wad) Marty September 5, 1994
This, too, was another of those WADs you just couldnt shake. Its decidedly better than the first, with slightly better action and more varied design. It does have one cool area with an inverse pyramid of sorts. But on the whole, pretty lame. 2/5
Atlantis (Atlnts1.wad)
William (Bill) Lachance April 9, 1994
This is a small fort level. No idea why its named Atlantis. Its mostly E1 style. Action is easy. Architecture is alright; there are some moments where you could tell the author would be good once he got more experienced. But aside from a few nice E1 moments, nothing special. Oh, he also pulls the classic dick move of mislabeling the key strip next to a locked door. Special. Nostalgia hunters only. 3/5
BadBlu
Kim Markworth May 31, 1994
This Wad was in the Maximium files. Its typical first level fare; large, bare rooms; textures and themes randomly changing from sector to sector; enemnies and powerups strewn randomly. Despite this it plays pretty well, and each indivical area doesnt look too bad. (It also looks kickass in jDoom, I might add.) Maximum vets and nostalgia hunters should appreciate this one. 3.5/5
Bad Dream
Rick Rooster Lowder July 10, 1994
Theres something unique about the way this level is designed. Maybe its the somewhat over-sized rooms, contrasted with the somewhat underpopulation of them. Maybe its the use of old-school cages and shelves. But no matter what, this Wad definitely has a Tom Hall (i.e. E1M4) feel to it. The action is pretty good, with ammo a little scarce. Overall, a fun, medium-sized romp. Nostalgia hunters and fans of offbeat design will definitely enjoy it. 3.5/5
Balllock
Jeff Blank June 22, 1994
Already exists as B-lock.wad. */5
Barfight
John Stern October 28, 1994
A strange, small, symmetrical level. Brown walls, wood skull doors (when theyre marked), UAC crates everywhere. About twenty imps in total. Odd. Not good. 2/5
Base (BaseWad.wad)
Brandon TALON Davids August 11, 1994
TALON says he tried to make this level like the original Doom levels, and like FunDuke, says, he does in fact succeed. A little too well. At first, I thought it was going to be an E1-style level, only with even better detail than the original. My entthusiasum waned when I realized some areas were lifted directly from the game. It also starts branching out to other texture styles, so it ends up more like an E3 level. Still, the original areas are quite good, along with the action, and it has a level of detail good enough to make it rise above, especially given when it was made. So check it out. Its small anyways.
4/5
Base (BaseWadA.wad)
KiLaJaJa June 23, 1994
Ohoho. This WAD. This was in the Maximum files. Its utter crap, forget it exists. (On a side note, I was stuck on this level for years because theres a door marked as needing a blue key. One day, on a whim, I decided to try and open it anyway, just for shits and giggles. Bingo! It wasnt locked at all. Asshole.) 1/5
FROM OUT OF THE WAD BIN... 'Bdw' (Bdw.wad)
B.P.R.D. April 1997
Despite what the author says, this set of levels aint that bad. Its an incomplete new episode for Doom, and while the levels all certainly feel as such, a lot of them have some pretty neat architecture and details. E1M1 and E3M8 I particularly liked. But all of E1 is pretty neat, with some instances of E1-style nostalgia that will bring a chill to you. Speaking of chills, E1M1 is FREAKISHLY similar to a dream about Doom I had once. Like, seriously. I liked the first level of E2 but otherwise it didnt do much for me. Like I said, the highlights of E3 are M1 and M8. Theres some pretty nice Hell style there. So on the whole, nostalgia hunters should check out E1, and fans of offbeat design should check out the levels I noted. 3/5
Berserk (BerserkJ.wad)
Jon Landis June 13, 1994
Wow, this is an utterly classic WAD. Sprawling (but only about medium-sized), totally random texture changes, and good, fast-paced action. Nostalgia hunters will definitely love it; everyone else should have fun too. 3.5/5
Siawn Hy's Keep (Beta7.wad)
Siawn Hy August 15, 1994
Despite the hokey text file and the authors preposterous request that people pay to keep receiving updates, this level is playing for keeps. Its the sort that slowly unfolds as you play, one of my favorite kinds, personally. Its only medium sized, but the action is so tough thatll last quite awhile. Its damn near impossible on single playerfortunately, the author gives you permission to respawn (i.e. IDDQD to restore your health) twenty-five times, which is more than enough to kill almost everything twice over. But like I said, ammo and health are scarce, so watch it. Overall, a tough, interesting levelcheck it out. 4/5
Be Warned
Paul Cooper July 31, 1994
I believe there was a Doom2 version of this in the Maximum files. This is a small Wad, mostly off-grid, texturing mostly random, action pretty easy. I guess you could say its notable for its large room with a preposterous amount of cacodemons within. You could have some fun there. Otherwise: 2/5
Bart's House 2.0 (BHouse2.wad)
Bart McEndree April 15, 1994
A small house WAD. Does nothing for the genre. Bad texturing. FunDuke said it was realistic, which is obviously why theres a bed in the middle of the front yard. Meow. Underpopulated, easy action. Yawn. 2/5
Big Mac
Richard Khouw September 14, 1994
This is an office level, of the worse kindcramped. But shockingly, despite this, its actually pretty good. Action is toughdepending on how you go, you might not get a lot of health. Architecture is pretty good; its one failing is that the texturing isnt appropriate at all. It uses STARTAN textures throughout almost the whole levelwhich makes just about zero sense to me. Mostly due to this, it ends with a 3.5/5.
Bites the dust (BiteDst2.wad) Scott McCreary June 16, 1994
Hey, I remember this level. This is an odd one. Lots of GRAY, narrow corridors, jumps, and such, plus an outside area. Includes a crappy MIDI of Another One Bites the Dust. Action is pretty easy. Texturing is random. Its not bad though, fans of offbeat design and Maximum vets might enjoy. Its small too, so its hard to go too wrong.
3/5
BLADE13
Bob Lange June 2, 1994
This author just might be my favorite of all time, simply because he used pontificate in his text file. But at any rate, this is a pretty cool level. Architecture is very nice (Doom-quality) and detail is pretty good too. Action is good until the very end when it gets a little easy. Texturing is good, though it changes from area to area. This is a very fun, medium-sized WAD that just about anyone should enjoy, especially nostalgia hunters. It is designed with a lot of one-way doors, which is also kinda interesting, so fans of offbeat design might get a kick too. By the way, the new music is Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565 by J.S. Bach, i.e., the Dracula theme. (Especially if you spent any time on the Wildwood boardwalk in the 90s, heh.) It suffers a little in MIDI translation, might want to substitute your own mp3 if you got one. 4/5
BLAST
David Dione July 2, 1994
This WAD consists mostly of ruthlessly square rooms. Yes, friends, ruthlessly square rooms. Texturing is terrible. Most of the time the ceiling is low enough to emulate Wolfenstein perfectly. Action is easy; I spent good chuck of the time playing one-handed while I ate some Slim Jims. 2/5
Blast Em!
Russell J. Lauzon June 23, 1994
Probably one of the most amusing text files Ive ever read. You start off outside a large fort in the middle of a bunch of water. Enemies are all around. Survive. The action is pretty good, probably a bit tough depending on how you go about it. The fort isnt really that much of a fort, just a bunch of interconnected rooms and passages with an open feel, usually looking on either a courtyard or the outside. Architecture is nice. Texturing is a little random, but not bad. It includes that Terminator theme MIDI that was floating around the community for awhile, and some new weapon sounds which I actually rather enjoyed. On the whole, this is a smallish Wad thats a lot of fun; everyone should enjoy it, but nostalgia hunters and fans of offbeat design will definitely want to check it out. 4/5
bleah! (bleha.wad)
Walter "Daimon" Confalonieri December 3, 2006
An odd one. The music sounds very similar to what Doomworld used to use for Post Hell (meaning its loud and obnoxious), which makes me think its probably a joke WAD from some dumb inside joke on the forums. Then again, it could be a ploy to get people to turn off the music. But probably not. Architecture is good, and detail is too; the author says its inspired by the Spawning Vats, and it shows. But at the same time, theres also noobish things like crowds of zombies and big plasma packs strewn all over the ground. So I dont know whats up with this level. Theres one kinda cool area at the end, but theres probably no reason to play this unless you really like E2M7, or something. 3/5
Bloodfeast (BloodFst.wad)
K.Maple July 29, 1994
Kinda big. Mazy. Pretty random texturing. Easy action. Mediocre architecture and detail. Second level is smaller but worse. Yeah. 3/5
Baron on an Altar (BoA.wad)
Andrew Murphy June 19, 1994
This WAD is pretty fun. The thing that makes this smallish-medium-sized level interesting is that its almost entirely non-orthogonicno square rooms or right angles or anything. And surprisingly, it looks good. It makes you feel as if youre in a burrow of some sort, instead of the standard military base or whatever. Architecture is good, too. Its only failing is that the texturing is a bit random. Action is pretty easy too. And I couldnt figure out how to get the yellow key. But still, I enjoyed it; fans of offbeat design will definitely want to check it out. 3.5/5
B21 (BobMe21.wad)
Bob Carter July 17, 1994
This is a somewhat large level 100% in E2 style, meaning mediocre architecture and totally random texturing. On top of that, some areas were lifted directly from episode 2 itself, which I thought was pretty lame. It IS a classic example of an E2M1 level, but probably nostalgia hunters only will enjoy this WAD. 3/5
Barts Office 1.1 (BOffice.wad)
Bart McEndree April 15, 1994
Another day, another office level. This one sucks. Design is totally unrealistic (I KNOW your office doesnt have this much goddamn empty space, BART), crappy, with shitty texturing as well, and those oh-so-amusing "theres items on the counter that you cant even grab". Did you even playtest this thing man? Action is easy, too. 2/5
BRETT2  Version 1.1 --> Brett's Hell (Bret2Awe.wad)
Brett Russel November 11, 1994
This ZIP comes with two WADs, the main file and an additional music file, and I have to say, I knew I was screwed from the moment I started listening to them. Its absolutely the most retarded, inappropriate, eclectic mix of SHIT I have ever listened to. Highlights include 90s grunge songs (Smells Like Teen Spirit and Black Hole Sun), an organ song that sounds like it was arranged by my eight year-old nephew, what I swear has to be a Disney piano medley, and a whole bunch of songs that sound like they were made by a Teletubby. The levels were exactly what I expected: large, sprawling, random textures, mediocre action, no architecture . . . E2M4 is kinda E1-style, if you really get your kicks from that stuff. 2/5
BUTT (Butt_WAD.wad)
June 19, 1994
This WAD seemed fairly large, with a preposterous amount of enemies, actually making action quite tough. Architecture was mediocre, texturing random. But the most notable thing about this WAD is the absolutely infuriating smooth jazz music that was included with it. After crashing jDoom for now apparent reason for about the fifth time, I gave it the finger and walked away. Mostly due to that freaking music, this gets a 2/5.
THE FIRST 100% COMPLETELY NEW LEVEL FROM BWS! (BWSDmL11.wad) Acidic Brain May 30, 1994
As youve probably noticed, this claims to be the first PWAD ever. But I dont even need to check to know thats wrong. (Unless of course, the timestamps are incorrect. But even then I doubt it.) Still, it does seem old, and its better than a lot of other peoples firsts, so it gets a
3/5. Nostalgia hunters or anyone looking to own a piece of possible Doom history should check it out.
