| Commentary: Whenever Elizabeth Montgomery would tire of playing sweet Samantha, she could always look forward to playing kooky cousin Serena. Now its Dick's turn to play a totally different character, and he obviously relishes the chance. This is one of my favorite episodes featuring Dick Sargent. He really shines, and turns in one of his best performances in the series. He wasn't just playing a boring, mortal straight-man reacting to the witches magic. He gets to be "off the wall"--and lecherous to boot! Also, with that crazy wig and beard, Dick is totally unrecognizable: sort of a cross between a scary, deranged drifter and a Survivor outcast. Add to that the Irish accent, and Dick really proved that he could hold his own with the rest of them. As you may recall, Dick York also played Darrin's ancestor, Darrin the Bold, in episode #79, "A Most Unusual Wood Nymph," which means Sargent really replaced York twice, resulting in yet another interpretation. |
