RAF Darrells Island, circa 1942. The two Coranado flying boats in the fore ground belong to RAF Air Transport Command, operating trans-Atlantic transport capability. Two Catalina patrol aircraft are visible behind. These would be in the charge of RAF Ferry Comand, responsible for delivering them from their US factories to the RAF squadrons across the Atlantic. Both Commands were established at Darrells Island 'til the US Army land completed a land plane aerodrome at the East of the island. ATC then relocated there. The US Navy also briefly operated its Kingfisher floatplanes from Darrells Island 'til their own flying boat station in Southampton was completed. At the bottom right, the pennant of the stations pre-war user BOAC, successor to Imperial Airways is visible. The government owned airline was put to war duties during the conflict, flying atrans-Atlantic air service through the island, including all mail which was subjected to censors here byb MI5 before being flown on.
