MR. F. LEA SMITH A VOLUNTEER.
----------
Another young Bermudian who has joined the ranks of those who have heard and obeyed the voice of their King and Country.
Mr. Frederick Lea Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.Blauvelt Smith, was in New Jersey when the war broke out, following his profession as an engineer. Born in Bermuda and now nineteen years of age, he applied at once for permission to enlist in the English army. He was enrolled in New York and left Newport, Mass. for England. Reaching liverpool after a voyage of 16 days, he applied to be enrolled with the Bermuda Contingent. This, at present, was found to be impossible, so being over six feet high, Mr. Lea Smith joined the Grenadier Guards, the first Regiment of Foot, who are noted for their height.
All his countrymen will wish Mr. Lea Smith a safe and happy return to his parents and home. A wish that will be intensified when they recollect that he followed the dictates of patriotism and the example of many brave men in leaving his profession at his countrys call.
We understand that his elder brother, Mr. Floyd Smith, also volunteered but that so many Englishmen had gone already from his place of business in the States, that it was found impossible to spare him.
