He had been ill for several days before the fatal attack, and was taken to the hospital the preceding Thursday night by Orilo Parker and Edward Gregory. Born in Elmore, Ill., on August 30, 1881, Mr aby came to goldfield in the early days as a young man of 23. For many years he was connected with the Nevada Packing Co., going on the road as a salesman after first working in the plant here. With Henry Poffenberger, he later purchased the wholesale business owned by B. I. Barlow, exevtually disposed of his interest to Mr. Poffenberger. In Recent years he had been janitor and custdian of the Goldfield school, where he was a great favorite with all the youngsters. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. B.F. | Arrival this week of additional Dodge Co. personel has aggravated Goldfield's tight housing situation. Crews are being augmented in preparation for the start of highway construction work through town to be started soon. Houses with plumbing and other facilities are becoming increasingly scarce, despite the fact that many Dodge Families have brought trailers with them. As a public service, the News - Bulletin will provide free listing for the time being of any suitable home that are for rent. |

Mechantical and other difficulties have been plaguing the State Line mill near Goldpoint, which broke down just before the end of June when liners in the old ball mill were ripped apart. New Parts were cast in Reno and are now being installed, it is reported. The plant is expected to resume normal operation late this week. Truckers are said to be experiencing difficulty in negotiating the rough road to the mill, and occasionally find themselves in need of help to complete the last part of the journey. The management is hopeful that this condition will be corrected in the near future. The plant specializes in the treatment of custom gold and silver ore and is seeking all that it can get.

The board of county commissioners this week heard a suggestion that one of its members be "traded" for a fire chief. Advocationg such a move was Dr. Ruth Lighhall, who said that the town needs a full time fire chief more than it does three commissioners. asked by Commissioner John Simpson if she had any preference as to whom should be "traded," Dr.Lighhall responded that it really didn't make any difference as far as she could see. The retired physcian, whose attendance at the board meetings is almost as regular as that of the commissioners, also protested parking the fire truck outside the fire station. Asserting that the hot sun and occasional rain would eventually damage the hose, she served warning that she would enter a suit against the town if her home were ever lost by fire. She futher told the board that unless official steps are taken to have the truck housed in the fire station, she would circulate a petition demanding the move.

With the weatherman cooperating perfectly, Goldfield's annualindependence day celebration was run off smoothly under the supervision of the local Elks lodge. The crowd reached its peak early in the evening when the free public barbecue was served in the Does dining room, with members of that organization doing the serving. The barbecue, prepared under the direction of Harry Clinton, was pronounced delicious. Children's races occupied the morning hours with Peter Loncar in charge. the tug-of-war was won by a team of Goldfielders, after which the crowd adjourned to the ball field to watch a softball game between a team designated as the Dodge Construction and Goldfield. The contest developed into a slam-bang affair with Dodge finally adjudged the winner, 12 to 11. In the evening there was dancing in Elks hall to juke box music. At the Goldfield club, the Asbill orchestra from Beatty regaled the crowd with snappy dance tunes.

There is hardly a chamber of commerce anywhere which didn't bellow "We was robbed" when the unofficial census court was made known. The yipe started in Los Angeles and can be heard echoing all over the country. I think Esmeralda county is in a swell position in cthat something just the opposite. With only 605 humans found hiding within its confines, we can claim the smallest population of any county in the nation. Our slgan could be: :"If you want to get away from it all, come to Esmeralda county where two's a crowd and three's a mass demonstration."
