| Fred Thomson played the part as frontier scout Kit Carson with Dorothy Janis as an Indian Princess in the silent Western hit "Kit Carson". Thomson came to Goldfield with his wife Gan at the end of 1914 to preach in the imposing Presbyterian Church at the corner of Ramsey and Fith Avenue, where the grade school stands today. Standing 6ft. 2in. tall and weighing 210 pounds, the 24 year old pastor with reddish brown hair and deep blue eyes with a strikingly handsome giant of a man. Thomson was very popular in Goldfield, with a reputation as a sportsman and a track star. He soon became a local hero to the youngsters as he formed sports and athletic teams. A splendid horse back rider he arranged ridding expeditions into the surrounding hills and also started the Goldfield Boy Scout Troop, which became the most active in the state. In 1915 the minister was appointed as the Nevada Commissioner to the Boy Scouts of America. As motion pictures became the rage, movie stars also came to Goldfield to Make personal appearances at the Hippodrome Theater. Like everyone else , Thomson also visited the theater, but at that time the minister appeared to be the most unlikely person in town to become a Hollywood movie star. |
