Bldg. #61. 55 Mill St., Toronto "a body of work that had a significant influence on major photographers" An Exhibition of photographs by Harold Edgerton. Monsieur Harold Edgerton was a professor of electrical engineering at MIT and the inventor of the strobe light, which allowed him to literally freeze objects in the frame of the photograph. His inventive works captured the effects of motion, the human form and phenomena too fast for the human eye to perceive. With Edgerton's photography it was possible, for the first time, to see a remarkable range of objects in motion: the exact moment a bullet pierces through a playing card, the infinitesimal positions of a swinging gold club, the smooth motion of gymnasts tumbling or the rapid swings of a lacrosse player. Monsieur Gus Kayafas will give a brief talk on the work of Monsieur Harold Edgerton. & "Südwest" - familiar, or seemingly familiar, landscapes - An Exhibition of a large, abstract photographs by Leipzig-based Frank Mädler. The works are enigmatic and dream-like, with little evidence of human engagement or narrative potential. At 4' x 6', the photographs are large but decidedly minimal, with little visual information relating the images to the scenes depicted. Like much of Mädler's work, these ambiguous compositions call attention to the relationship between the passage of time and its visual representation. Till October 25, Au 25 Octobre 2008. The painterly spaces created by Michael Smith are dynamic expressions of the vitality of nature. Further, the accumulation of energetic brushwork and colour provides a strong connection to the artist’s process. Smith employs the dramatic use of light found in Baroque paintings (as if night and day coexist) yet his images are composites of diverse sources: paintings by artists such as Corot, Poussin and Claude (artists who first raised the status of landscape painting); the atmospheric effects of Turner; historical film footage; and the Internet (contemporary images of landscape within the arena of war, conflict or disaster). Steven Nederveen studied fine art at Medicine Hat College and went on to receive a Bachelor of Design from the University of Alberta in 1995. The following year he moved to Vancouver (1996-2000) where Steven practiced meditation and found that this experience combined with the beauty of the landscape greatly contributed to his growth as a person and an artist. It was these moments that lead Steven to use painting to draw connections between our natural environment and aspects of spirituality. By blurring the lines between photography and painting, he develops a magical realism that inspires us to see the world with new eyes. By using distressing and aging the work he creates the sense of past and present, of struggle and transformation.
