Fragments of time too brief for human reflexes, still photographs are unlike other forms of narrative expressions. Visually self contained, silent and unmoving. You, the viewer, supply context and your experiences to turn a selection of images into a personal narrative. Just who is in charge of making images memorable anyway? & An Exhibition of photographs by Natalie Drajewicz. The vacant city is a simulated hyper-reality of life - a metropolis populated by the excess machinery deemed necessary for human existence that functions in the void of humanity. The compression of a multiplicity of moments of time into one static impossibility points to the disjuncture of human life often blamed on the city. 'The City' has come to stand for both technological grandeur and the moral decay of people. Human presence is absent, and a moment in the vacant city captures the un-presence. & An Exhibition of photographs by Sheila Jonah. Life is a Merry-Go-Round! Jump on! Sheila is a artist that celebrates life and her photographs communicate her zest for adventure. She uses her camera to capture a moment in time. Insightful and quirky images to engage the viewer and convey a sense of wonder and discovery Till May, 2009 Au Mai 2009. Toronto photographer, Steven James Brown, invites us to force our attention on the minutia of life. Working in his studio, with a large-format view camera, he focuses his lens on objects that are seemingly diverse. These disparate, often odd, and sometimes disturbing objects take on a level of importance and significance as Brown categorizes them into groups and collections and focuses the viewers' attention on the often-tainted beauty of the single object. Following the success of Gun Control, a CONTACT 2008 Feature Exhibition at Brayham Contemporary Art, WORD PLAY combines Brown's love of literature and interest in the written word with his skill as a still-life studio photographer. As an avid reader, Brown is fascinated by language, as well as by the aesthetics of individual words and the way groups of words appear on the page. In 2002 Brown questioned what would happen to a book put through a paper shredder. As the Bible is claimed to be the most popular single-volume book it seemed to be the perfect place to start. Searching through the shredded remains of the Bible, Brown looked for words that were both intact and interesting. Using a large-format camera and e6 film, Brown photographed the juxtaposed words creating Chapter 11, the first work in the series. Till May 31, 2009 Au 31 Mai 2009. Johnston seems to be in a constant state of composing, cropping, and editing, seeing the potential of a great photograph, "Watch what happens when the light changes", before it is camera-ready. This is all happening whether or not he has a camera in his hands. It is important to attempt to establish what constitutes a good photograph. "When there is an understanding, when I can convey a thought or a statement within the guidelines I have set for myself, if there is a connection, then I imagine I have created a successful photograph". Proprietor, Gallery Director & Curator Madame Angela Brayham. E-mail: [email protected] . 1318 Queen St., E., Toronto "MIND | PLACE | SPIRIT" An Exhibition featurimg photography by Susan Moldenhauer. MIND | PLACE | SPIRIT is Wyoming based photographer, Susan Moldenhauer's second solo exhibit in Toronto. Susan Moldenhauer's black and white images beautifully capture the open and austere Wyoming landscape, juxtaposing this with the almost spiritual and sensual movement of the figure and fabric. Moldenhauer's work differs from that of most landscape photographers as it is not concerned so much with the physical environment, political or social issues, or land use; but rather is much more personal focusing on individual perception. She uses scarves and fabric to not so much alter, but enhance the landscape and our individual perceptions of it. MIND | PLACE | SPIRIT marks Moldenhauer's return to her early passion black & white photography and reintroduces the figure into her work. Moldenhauer is both subject and photographer in these images. While she composes the overall image in her viewfinder, she cannot control her placement in the composition, the scale of her figure to the background, or the movement of the fabric at the moment of exposure. The resulting images are ethereal, spiritual and dynamic. MIND | PLACE | SPIRIT also juxtaposes Moldenhauer's current black and white images with some of her earlier colour work. MAY 4, MONDAY/LUNDI 4 MAI
MAY 6, WEDNESDAY/MERCREDI 6 MAI Une exposition photographiees de Anna-Katharina Scheidegger. * * * * As a part of the CONTACT photography festival, the AFT presents "Toronto Nights" An Exhibition of photography by Anna-Katharina Scheidegger. Born in 1976 in Sumiswald, Switzerland, Anna-Katharina Scheidegger lived in Paris and in Bern. She studied in the ENSAD, then in the Studio national de Fresnoy, from 2003 to 2005. With the fall of night, the city seems to change in its proportions and forms. Darkness frames the interiors of apartments and highlights the individual element within the urban web. The personal, warm nest of the citizen is like a single pixel in the image of a contemporary society. Scheidegger tries, in silent ways, to surprise. The process she engages in to create her work is to step back, wait, see and finally, to show. With the support of the Studio Le Fresnoy, the Consulat général de Suisse and the Consulat général de France. Au 29 Mai, 2009, Till May 29, 2009. E-mail: [email protected] . 80 Spadina Ave., Toronto *** THE EPHEMERAL FACE *** - Selected Portraits from the Mira Godard Study Centre, Ryerson University - Advisor: Monsieur David Harris. The Ephemeral Face: Selected Portraits from the Mira Godard Study Centre is a student-curated exhibition examining the nature of the photographic portrait. The genre is considered broadly through works focusing on the fragility of the human condition as conveyed through an individual’s subtle gestures and facial expressions. The exhibition comprises the work of more than twenty photographers, ranging from the 19th through the 21st century and including Berenice Abbott, Phil Bergerson, Mathew Brady, Rafael Goldchain, Dave Heath, Mary Ellen Mark, Wendy Snyder MacNeil, and Gabor Szilasi among others. In its presentation, the exhibition deliberately juxtaposes traditionally conceived portraits, in which the sitter directly confronts the camera, with more unconventional ones that capture a subject in the midst of an event. With this distinction as a guiding principle, the selection and arrangement of these diverse photographs propose an open-ended, multifaceted definition of photographic portraiture. MAY 8, FRIDAY/VENDREDI 8 MAI An Exhibition of photographs by Sanaz Mazinani. Madame Sanaz Mazinani's colour diptychs and marquee photographs explore the physical landscape and human faces of contemporary Iran, her country of origin. Each image contains its own narrative qualities and together they create a complex portrait of the country. The recent history of Iran familiar to most outsiders begins with the Islamic Revolution, followed by the resulting social restrictions successive leaders have imposed on the country. This aspect of history is incomplete and offers only a narrow view of Iranian culture. Madame Sanaz Mazinani is a recent recipient of the Canada Council Art Bank Program and this exhibition is supported by Ontario Arts Council Material Assistance Program. Curated by Bonnie Rubenstein, Director of Contact Toronto Photography Festival. Till June 6, 2009 Au 6 Juin 2009. E-mail: [email protected] . 80 Spadina Ave., Toronto *** Salt and Earth *** "Whole Village" An Exhibition of photographs by Jonathan Taggart. TORONTO . . . Jonathan Taggart's Salt and Earth (2008) offers an impressionistic portrait of Whole Village , a contemporary farming cooperative whose biodynamic practices offer an alternative to dominant agribusiness models. Revolutionary in their "off the grid" objectives, communal farms such as Whole Village rely on the pooling of member resources to achieve self-sufficiency. In a late-capitalist society, the collective's lifestyle is exceptional in its means, aims and commitment to sustainability. Shot from the hip and presented in rich black-and-white tones, this series depicts a community's embrace of ancient farming practices, extraordinary in today's short-term gain/high-tech culture. Slow, hand-wrought and labor intensive, here everything old is new, echoed even Taggart's chosen approach of analogue photography. Sensual, close in, bathed at times in sparkling luminosity, at times in inky shadow, these scenes move us along with the cycle of the seasons. Simple acts and subtle tensions play on through the everyday lives of the community. Family-like, yet not just one family, the collective comes together and moves apart. In Salt and Earth, the members of the collective stand before us, quiet revolutionaries in the face of environmental peril, suggesting what may be one answer to our way forward. -Katy McCormick Till June 6, 2009 Au 6 Juin 2009. MAY 16, SATURDAY/SAMEDI 16 MAI Jordan Junck, Michelle Kemble, Rinath Maman, Yadi Mazinani, Nigel Noble, Kamelia Pezeshki, Ian Revell, Wayne Salmon, Aaron Tator and Sashar Zarif. Making a photograph is a highly personal experience. What the photographer sees, and the manner in which he or she composes, reflects a unique perspective. This exhibition features unique perspectives of Canadian photographers, each informed by their own background; from captured movement to pastoral stillness and from staged scenarios to unembellished glimpses of real life. When seen together, these works not only reveal individual approaches to visions, but the scope of the medium itself. . Till May 28, 2009 Au 28 Mai 2009.
