"Between Observation and Intervention"

- THE PAINTED PHOTOGRAPHS OF MELVIN CHARNEY -

"Artist/architect Melvin Charney has focused his eye upon the city. The art resulting from his careful study includes photographs, sculpture, installations, monuments, and urban plans; among the most arresting works are his painted photographs in which bold images in pastel and paint are overlaid on printed mass media images." These large-scale layered works, which challenge our understanding of cities and their components, will be the focus of the exhibition at Americas Society.

"ABANDON"
An Exhibition of photography by Mark Coatsworth.
The Exhibition is a four part, photographic documentary series about our world after
ecological collapse. From the decline of Canada's Atlantic fisheries, to the resource
rush in the far North, to the great floods of New Orleans, ABANDON examines
modern societies who ignored the early warnings, and so brought about their own
destruction. These series are microcosms of what is happening to our planet on
a global scale. This is the story of the things left behind.

« Sommes-nous? »

An Exhibition of photography by Tendance Floue with the photographe Philippe Lopparelli.

Our personal and political concerns have focused our attention on Paris, Bombay, Buenos
Aires, Los Angeles, the North Pole and elsewhere. Current events are evoked blending
impressions with History. Faces, unusual encounters, urban landscapes, desolate stretches.
Humanity comes face to face with the anxious universe we have created and which we wish to
endow with meaning. We collide with nature and its contrasting greatness. Different worlds
meet – solemnly or mockingly. Contrasts arise and the question “Are we?” remains unanswered.

- Tendance floue -

"Anikora-Seifuku "
An Exhibition of digitally constructed images by Ryoko Suzuki .
In Anikora - Seifuku, Ryoko Suzuki challenges the conventional understanding of social documentary with digitally constructed images that comment on the specific social roles of women living in contemporary Japan. Depicting popular Japanese dolls, akin to Barbie dolls in North America, the artist's face is superimposed to create uncanny, larger than life-size characters that illustrate traditionally "appropriate" gender roles: nurse, schoolgirl and waitress, among others. The distorted, unrealistic bodies of the dolls, reminiscent of animé, express the notion of the supercute, or "kawaii." This idea confronts the cute, but often highly erotic, fictionalized portrayal of women that is prevalent in Japanese comics, advertising and children's toys.
&
"Empty Lots"
An Exhibition of images of abandoned parking lots by Chad Gerth .
Chad Gerth's Empty Lots series explores and documents the intricacies of urban and human landscapes through images of abandoned parking lots slowly being reclaimed by nature. Made in Gerth's hometown of Chicago, these images represent the contemporary city not through its distinctive skyline but through the flatness of its terrain and the common yet unremarkable areas that exist in any city. Shot from a high, almost vertiginous point of view, the cityscape is transformed into a barely recognizable, abstract plane of shape and colour. The modernist, machine-like grid construction of so many North American cities is here exemplified by the rigidly defined boundaries of both the lots and the photographs themselves, tightly cropped and carefully composed. Gerth calls these spaces, these empty lots, "gaps of nothingness ... like grass in the cracks of the sidewalk or a rhizomic void in the skyline." They exist not as places of civic or social importance, but as vacant spaces beyond control of the city.
&
" Roadkill "
An Exhibition of work by Marc Séguin.
Roadkill consists of large scale, figurative oil paintings that explore the communicative potential of traditional artistic methods. Incorporating entirely original found material - the roadkill of the title is actual roadkill attached to the canvas - these works are surreal, haunting meditations that eliminate all narrative potential. Ghost-like apparitions float in empty space, with the faces and identities of these strange figures obscured by paint, masks and hoods. Employing his signature style, Séguin creates complex, emotionally charged works with little embellishment. At its core his work examines not only the dark, hallucinatory world of his subjects but the very processes and methods of oil painting itself. Marc Séguin's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in major public collections throughout Canada. He lives and works in New York City.

- A Celebratory Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Canadian Poetry -

The Peter Paul Bilingual (Italian/English) Series of Contemporary Canadian Poets celebrates its 15th anniversary (May 2-16, 2008) with an exhibition displaying all the volumes edited by Branko Gorjup and Francesca Valente in the past 15 years. Each volume, handsomely produced, is bilingual, featuring a selection of poems by a prominent Canadian poet, accompanied by images created by a contemporary Italian artist as a visual commentary on the poet's work. The exhibit will include a number of original art works created for the Series by some of Italy's finest contemporary artists.

On this occasion, the 10th volume in the Series, The Solitude of Strength/La solitudine della Forza by Leonard Cohen, will be launched together with Words & Images, a celebratory anthology selected from the existing ten volumes. The Peter Paul Series of Contemporary English Canadian Poets was founded by Branko Gorjup and Francesca Valente in 1993 as a unique cross-cultural venture, aimed at promoting Canadian contemporary poets in Italy and Canada.

The Series is distributed in Canada by McArthur & Company, Toronto and in Italy by Longo Editore, Ravenna.

"In The Offing"
An Exhibition of new photographs by Cora Cluett.
As in her painting, Cluett reveals the abstracted layers of a history. In this case she has chosen the decaying pillboxes and bunkers, loaded with remembrances and touched by many generations. Her viewpoint is the same in all the works, pointing to the cut in the abstracted surface, out to another sight. The results, much like her ongoing painting practice, are sensuous and eerily beautiful.
