Lauren Nurse’s installation revolves around the idea of collisions between nature and culture. Posing a series of questions concerning ideas of public space and how we interact with natural forms within these spaces. Her evocation of “wildness” shows ambiguous relationships built between humans and nature as seen in greenhouses, gardens, nature parks and similar artificially constructed spaces. Nature is shown to be a supple material for the reproduction of human desire. Lauren Nurse, a Quebec transplant, now lives and works in Toronto. She recently graduated from York University MFA program with a concentration in print media and installation. She teaches Design at Sheridan College and Print Media at both Ontario College of Art and Design and York University. She is currently pursuing a degree in Horticulture from Guelph University. Nurse has participated in exhibitions in Toronto, Montreal, New Mexico and Italy and has completed residency programs at Montreal’s Atelier de L’ile, Atelier Circulaire, the Vermont Studio Center, Newfoundland’s Pouch Cove Foundation and the Muskoka’s Tree Museum Sculpture Garden.
