"ICE HUTS"

An Exhibition of photography by Richard Johnson.

"As with its distant cousins the native Teepee and the Igloo,
the Ice Fishing Hut has its own essential purpose. It must be
weather resistant and transportable, giving basic shelter and
access to the ground beneath it."

From Marcus Schubert's curatorial statement.

The beautiful images in this remarkable exhibition are a wonder
to behold and as David Balzer from Toronto Life writes:

"Who needs air-conditioning when you have Johnson's austere
photographs of far-north ice fishing huts to keep you cool? Set
against white expanses and gray skies, and framed head-on,
the huts are most memorable as blocks of colour; many of
the works vaguely recall Kenneth Noland paintings.

Johnson's study of the huts is also a field guide to their eccentricities.
Each cabin bears the mark of its maker, a comment on the intrinsic
relationship between necessity and creativity."
