In the tradition of crazy quilts, a form of quilting dating from Victorian times that made use of small pieces of discarded cloth and worn out clothing, Walter’s quilts are about reusing material, and they have no planned design in shape or arrangement of color. Rather like painting, aesthetic choices are made as one piece meets another over the course of building the whole quilt. Made from a range of pressed wool felts, machine-stitched with cotton backing, these quilts are functional as bed covers or may be hung on the wall. Kathryn Walter lives in Toronto and has practiced as an artist since 1989, producing work that intersects visual art, material culture and the built environment. In 2000 she founded her company FELT, a vehicle through which she explores the material and culture of modern industrial felt through exhibitions, historical research, architectural commissions and a product line. Enso is a symbolic shape in Japanese Calligraphy. It is simply a circle, however, every circle reflects the uniqueness of the creator. In Zen Buddhism, it is said that Enso exposes the absolute truth and symbolizes enlightenment and the universe. The painting of an Enso is an expression of the moment and reveals the spirit of the artist. The strength of the line, its splashes, rugged bumps and seamless flow are all filled with subtle, yet complex, nuances. As no two creators are alike, the same lines resonate differently to its viewers. RSVP required !To reserve call: Tel: 416 966 1600 ext. 400 or E-mail: [email protected] . The Koffler Gallery Off-site: Venue: at Honest Ed's, Second Floor, West Wing. 581 Bloor St., W., Toronto "Honest Threads" An Exhibition of an interactive installation by Iris Häussler. In a crossover between art, literature, and theatre, acclaimed Toronto artist Iris Häussler creates immersive environments that explore personal histories, either real or fictional. Both imitating and challenging museum practices, Häussler integrates found and fabricated archives and artifacts in her installations, raising questions about the demarcation between art and everyday life. With this new project, Häussler engages the GTA public in sharing real life stories.. * ABOUT THE ARTIST * Mademoiselle Iris Häussler was born in Friedrichshafen, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 2001. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and has exhibited widely throughout Europe. She is best known for her off-site installations in which she constructs fictitious personae through the material environment they live in. Locations have included rented apartments (Ou topos, 1989; Ou topos, 1990; Mneme, 1996; Monopati, 2000), hotel rooms (Propolis, 1993) and most recently an entire residential house in downtown Toronto for The Legacy of Joseph Wagenbach (2006), an installation curated by Rhonda Corvese. Häussler's interest lies in the range of reactions of her protagonists to their life circumstances; Mark Kingwell has coined the term "haptic conceptual" for these narrative encounters. A complementary part of Häussler's work focuses on the visitor, with interactive installations that explore human existence and biography, including collections of human milk (Paidi, 1994) or institutional laundry (On Loan, 1995), interventions into hotel rooms (Piggyback, 1995), redefining the gallery as an overnight sleeping space (Xenotope, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2000) or exchanging clothing (Transition coat, 1999). Häussler currently lives in Toronto.. Curator: Mademoiselle Mona Filip. Till March 8, 2009 Au 8 Mars 2009. Curated by Monsieur Moses Znaimer. If youth is wasted on the young, can maturity be savoured by the seasoned? Can youthful exuberance develop into more experienced exaltation? An aging global population is now realizing that their "years of decline" can morph into a coming of age.. In the 1960's, Monsieur Spock said,"Live long and prosper." In this century, Monsieur Moses Znaimer points us to the possibilities which this blessing entails. With an aging demographic, the mature years can be transformed from "bust" to "boom" - or, more aptly, "Zoom." Artists have always pondered the human condition. Today's artists, like their cave-dwelling forebears, create art which is relevant to their particular circumstances. An extended, active and healthy life is now within our reach. Ignoring this would be akin to glossing over the invention of the wheel. Till February 1, 2009 Au 1 Fevrier 2009. Guest Curator: Dr. Thomas D. Dillehay. The Mapuche are the largest indigenous group in southern South America, they successfully resisted European intrusion longer than any indigenous society in American history until they were defeated by the Chilean army in the mid-1890s. Moon Tears: Mapuche Art and Cosmology presents objects from the Domeyko Cassel Collection, Santiago, Chile, that intend to elucidate Mapuche culture and history. The symbolic and artistic qualities of the objects presented in the exhibition reflect the high quality of cultural materialism and symbolism, social history, religious fervor, and political power of the Mapuche from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. Various object forms and design motifs on them reveal Andean, Incan, and Spanish cultural influences from the north. Through these objects we can partially recover the Mapuche's view of their past as preserved in the artistically and materially symbolic representation of resistance, public ceremony, gender, shamanism, and their understandings of the social and historical landscapes that surround them. Many objects in the collection also reflect directly on the core of Mapuche cosmology and religion, focusing on practices that link the living with their ancestors and major deities. By reflecting on the objects that represent these and other themes and presenting them in a visual narrative, we can begin to understand the thoughts an d cosmologies that have governed and continue to govern how the Mapuche have lived and survived.
