Elegance is the attribute of being unusually effective and simple. Corruption allows decay, flaws, breakdown or ruin to become positive tools in the hands of the designers as they develop effective and intriguing design resolutions that also express elegance. Elegance is often used as a standard for tastefulness. Here, designers observe the values of both high and low commodities in our culture in their creation of new objects. Sampling, reorganizing, duplication and recycling create surprising new juxtapositions and add new dimensions to familiar forms and objects.

Technology, wit, skill and thought are brought to bear in the expressive objects that are the make up of Radiant Dark 2009- Elegant Corruptions. The independently created works on display; reflect their maker’s determination to realize their ideas while creating something of meaning and value to others. MADE intends Radiant Dark to show in a fresh venue each year that invites a sense of discovery. Radiant Dark 2009 – Elegant Corruptions, continues to explore options in modern Canadian design practice that will reach out to a wide audience.

"its aesthetic pizzazz"
An Exhibition of painting by Ric Evans.

Ric Evans is one of Canada’s preeminent abstract painters and has been exhibiting his work since the early 1970s. He is well collected in Canada and abroad.

Roald Naasgard writes in his recent book Abstract Painting in Canada: “Quirky as Evan’s compositional structures often are, it is nevertheless when he pits structure against destabilizing contraries that his more recent painting delivers its aesthetic pizzazz. Evans interfered with the original pattern by systematically altering one of its components, which had a domino effect on the other relationships, shifting the location and perhaps affecting the size and shape of the excised notch, sometimes in unexpected ways.”

"ENSO"
- Contemporary Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition -
An Exhibition of work by Noriko Maeda.

Enso is a symbolic shape in Japanese Calligraphy. It is simply a circle, however, every circle reflects the uniqueness of the creator. In Zen Buddhism, it is said that Enso exposes the absolute truth and symbolizes enlightenment and the universe. The painting of an Enso is an expression of the moment and reveals the spirit of the artist. The strength of the line, its splashes, rugged bumps and seamless flow are all filled with subtle, yet complex, nuances. As no two creators are alike, the same lines resonate differently to its viewers.

"Funkaesthetics"
An Exhibition of work by Pedro Bell, Leigh Bowery, Free Dance Lessons
(Paige Gratland & Day Milman), Fergus Greer, David Gwinnutt, Nick Knight,
Will Munro, Adrian Piper, P-Funk, Salvatore Salamone, Sun Ra,
and Stephen Willats.

Curated by: Monsieur Luis Jacob and Monsieur Pan Wendt.

** Funkaesthetics ** is premised on the idea that Funk constitutes a uniquely rich system of thought. With its interest in the distant past of ancient Egypt and the allegorical futures of science-fiction, in its freakish costumes and focus on the figure of "the alien", Funk manifests a vision of time and identity as mutable and open to transformation. The exhibition is an occasion to consider Funk in the context of its birth at the time of Black consciousness and the struggles for civil rights in the United States. Funkaesthetics is also presented as a uniquely fertile and thought-provoking opportunity for us to reconsider Funk – here and today – in its sinister aspects as well as in its more familiar utopian aspects.

Till March 23, 2009 Au 23 Mars 2009.

* Sko! *
- everything happens all at once -

An Exhibition of sculptural works and the drawings by Svava Thordis Juliusson.

Sko! (everything happens all at once) is a response to the intersection of numerous recent changes in Juliusson’s life. The accumulation of objects, materials and stuff that she had been collecting over the years, suddenly became overwhelming. As she states

“This is not the ordinary kind of clutter; there are containers full of Styrofoam balls, and some that contain only shards of plaster; and others that are full of bungee cord remnants and pieces of old linoleum.”

While her initial instinct was to simply discard this collection of objects, she began to re-assemble and re-vitalize these accumulated but somewhat forgotten objects.

"White Noise"
An Exhibition of sound installation by Adam David Brown.

Guided by the principal of “less is more” , Brown set out to make several new works that were generated out of his interest in silence, ephemerality and emptiness. Intentionally spare, this work attempts to find a balance between emptiness and form, mark making and erasure. Using Pink Pearl erasers as a marking tool is an ironic gesture that playfully inverts the role of the eraser, allowing it to lend form to ideas that are ephemeral and invisible.

White Noise refers to a purely theoretical sound concept that imagines an infinite-bandwidth, a flat and dense noise signal that has equal power at any frequency. Because the total power of such a signal would be infinite, it is therefore impossible to generate.

"Aqua Regia"
An Exhibition of a painting on board by Cathie Bleck, Cleveland - U.S.A.

Meta Gallery is pleased to present Aqua Regia, new works by Cathie Bleck. In her first Canadian exhibition, the artist’s vision explores the nature of water, the forms it takes and its metaphorical value as the giver of all life. In Aqua Regia, literally translated as “Sacred Water”, it is appropriate that in the wake of our current environmental malaise, the artist chose to put water not in the context of a commodity to be bought and sold, nor of a resource for nations to fight over, but rather as the universal source of nourishment for all living things and the subsequent role it plays in the web of life.

"an impression of adding a sculptural (and poetic) dimension"

An Exhibition of sculpture by Montreal-based artist Stéphane La Rue.

This body of work gives an impression of adding a sculptural (and poetic) dimension tootherwise two-dimensional forms. Mylar sheets are tenuously joined by snippets of maskingtape, a material not normally regarded as a medium unto itself, but rather as an invisible tool. After observing the pieces of tape for their own discreet formal integrity within the picture space, the viewer’s gaze comes to shift between the advancing and receding layers of transparency. It is not a question of one overlapping the other, but of one becoming interchangeable with the other. Here, the tape becomes a signifier of process, the brave and fragile act of creating—and a mirror to the similarly brave and fragile act of absorbing, reflecting and enjoying.

"THE CAVE"
An Exhibition of porcelain sculpture and pastel painting by Shary Boyle.

The Cave, Shary Boyle’s second solo exhibition at Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, features new porcelain sculptures and pastel drawings. The title of this exhibition alludes to Boyle’s interest in the vast and fantastical variety of bats in the world, and their recent decline as a signal of impending ecological catastrophe. Characteristically, these pieces embody a finely tuned balance between the grotesque and seductive beauty. Other works in the exhibition include a recent series of pastel portrait drawings.
