*** Mayhem ***

An Exhibition of painting, photography & drawings by Martin Bureau,
Rachel MacFarlane, Carlos
& Jason Sanchez, John Scott and Michael Smith.

Martin Bureau explores the tension between nature and technology. His recent paintings depict hybrid creatures – birds of migration and fighter planes. These paintings seek, in both image and physical application of paint, a balance between construction and destruction, harmony and turmoil.

Rachel MacFarlane uses tiny maquettes of found refuse as reference for her chaotic painted worlds. In these disorienting illusions, discarded objects transform and become weightless, anthropomorphic and monumental.

The photographs of brothers Carlos and Jason Sanchez explore the psychological landscape of contemporary society. Documentary in appearance yet carefully staged, their images reveal the deep, complex and shifting meanings behind issues from the mass media as well as our collective unconscious.

Michael Smith paints sites of history and war, yet the works are highly abstracted to emphasize elemental force and sensation such as movement, heat and light. The resulting imagery is in a constant state of flux, on the brink of dissolution.

John Scott's drawings depict icons of history, religion, war, politics, science fiction and technology and prophesize the fragmenting of our psyche by technology and war. His latest series of Dark Commanders are looming omens, shadows of an ominous world..

"Industrial Bling"

An Exhibition of a new installation by Marcia Huyer and Robert Hengeveld.

Black rubber, chrome rims, the sparkle of 1970’s metallic yellow, and awhole lot of hot air would be one way to sum up the latest collaborativeefforts of artists Marcia Huyer and Robert Hengeveld. "Industrial Bling" is a melding of the two artist’s independent practices.

Marcia has been taming inflated fabric sculptures to redefine spaces, challenge expectations and encourage the viewer to experience the architectural space in a new way. Hengeveld is an installation and multi-media artist whose work manipulates our notion of an authentic reality. These differing practices have resulted in an object that is curious and fantastical yet grounded in the familiar.

*** The Drawn Film ***

"From the Moment I saw what a camera could do to artwork,
I knew I had to make a 'drawn film'."

- John Gould

An Exhibition of drawnings et films by John Gould .

John Gould is one of the most singular artists that Canada has produced.
During a 50 year career in which his skill and passion for drawing never
wavered, Gould also integrated film into his work, using its language
and conventions to further explore his art. "Drawn Film" features drawings
from Gould's Japanese, Mexican and Waubaushene Faces Series, all
of which were incorporated into the films also presented in this exhibition.
Roberts Gallery is proud to present this celebration of the life and work
