"What's What is What"
What’s What is What depicts of the generic event of a trade show: a chaotic and bustling sales floor offering seemingly unlimited possibilities in an artificially controlled space. Instead of one central composition or scene, each painting has been created on a scale to allow for multiple narrative focal points creating an over view of the convention centre’s grid floor plan, the dispersion of directed happenings ‘by the square foot’. The paintings’ unrestrained vantage point and endless amounts of characters in multiple vignettes reveal staged, carnivalesque elements while the event’s temporal reality is expressed in impermanent constructions, facades, booths and curtains placed underneath a maze of ceiling beams, air ducts and pipes. The expansive scale, aerial perspective and multiple scenes are intended to give a behind the scene’s view of the confidence game, the trade in generating illusions.
An Exhibition of large-scale series by Michael Lewis.
Till August 29, Au 29 Aout 2008.
