2.1 Where to get add-ons

If you just can't get enough Doom, you'll be wanting to download WADs. WADs can include new levels, graphics, monsters, sounds, music, or a combination of the above. So where do you get them from?

Well, a good place to start is right here in the Gestalt666 Resource. Check out the Doom World o' Hurtz, which features Top Ten lists of my ten favourite levels for Doom and Doom II, as well as a Level Of The Week for each game.

You could also do worse than checking out my own levels, which you can get from The Gestalt666 WADs Page here in the Resource. I'd especially recommend Cygnus IV and The Talosian Incident, both of which have received widespread praise...

If you just can't get enough Doom, then you'll be wanting to check out ftp.cdrom.com or one of its mirror sites. This is the largest of the Doom FTP sites, with literally hundreds of Doom WADs of all shapes and sizes. Just check through the table below to find the site nearest to you...

2.2 How To Use WADs

To play an add-on WAD for Doom or Doom II, you need to use the -FILE option at the DOS command line. Simply put your WAD in the same directory as Doom, and type DOOM -FILE FILENAME.WAD (for Doom) or DOOM2 -FILE FILENAME.WAD (for Doom II), replacing FILENAME.WAD with the name of the WAD file you want to play.

You can load up more than one WAD by just listing the files after the -FILE switch. For example, DOOM2 -FILE FILE1.WAD FILE2.WAD FILE3.WAD

2.3 Can I use Doom I WADs with Doom II?

No.

But you can convert them.

If you really want to play a Doom WAD with Doom II, or a Doom II WAD with Doom, then you need a conversion program to change the WAD. Try downloading Doom Conversion (DM2CV) from one of the following sites -

Once you've got this handy utility, you can convert Doom I, Doom II, Ultimate Doom or even Heretic WADs into WADs compatible with any of the other games... The program will automatically change monster and weapon types and wall, floor and ceiling textures to make sure the WAD will work properly. Once it's done, you can just run the converted WAD as normal...
