For the past 25 years, I have always been
celebrating my birthday in a grandest way - from a
formal debut party to a group excursion at Buenos
Aires. My guests would range from a minimum of 10,
to a maximum of around 100. Indeed, my past
birthday celebrations were all unforgettable but
expensive as well. So, last Sunday (July 16, 2006),
I thought of celebrating my birthday in a different
way - no birthday cakes, no balloons, no alcoholic
beverages and no guests.
At around 7:00 AM in the morning, I went to the
church to hear a mass with my brother. I guess it
was a good way of starting my birthday right, by
thanking God for giving me another year and for the
blessings that I have received from him for the past
26 years. After the mass, I went back to the house
and made myself busy. I cooked for lunch, arranged
the garden and cleaned the house as if visitors were
coming. In the afternoon, I made some baked
macaroni and delivered it straight to our neighbors,
relatives and friends. And to wrap up the day, I
bonded with my family as we sang the whole night
long with my father's newly bought Magic Sing and my
sister's box of doughnuts.
It wasn't my grandest birthday party, though,
however it was the most memorable one because, for
the first time in 26 years of my life, I have
received a birthday card from my parents. It may
not be that surprising for you to hear that, but it
was I think one of the most precious birthday
presents that I have received. You know, my parents
are not fond of writing me a card, but then, this
time, they took an extra time and effort to let let
me know how proud and happy they are to have me.
Well, last Sunday's celebration was just a simple
one but thanks to my family making it special.
