Tip of the Week 43 - About (3)

Last time we dealt with the expression 'mu chuairt'. This week we deal with the very similar expression 'mun cuairt'. As with 'mu chuairt', 'mun cuairt' is used both as an adverb and as a preposition.

1. 'mun cuairt' as an adverb.

Bha i a' toirt dhuinn dealbh air a' bhaile agus air na h-eileanan mun cuairt.
She was giving us a description of the town and of the islands round about.

Chaidh an sgeul mun cuairt gun robh e na mhortair.
The story went about that he was a murderer.

Bha e a' coiseachd mun cuairt le pasgan phàipearan na làimh.
He was walking about with a bundle of papers in his hand.

2. 'mun cuairt' + gen.

Tha gu leòr de ròin ghlas mun cuairt nan cladaichean.
There are plenty of grey seals around the shores.

This doesn't appear to be as common as the next expression.

3. mun cuairt air (prep. + dat.)

Tha am baile air a thogail air cnocan mun cuairt air loch.
The town is built on hillocks around / about a loch.

Sheòl an cabhlach mun cuairt air ceann-a-tuath Alba.
The fleet sailed round the north of Scotland.

Bha na dotairean mun cuairt orm nan còtaichean geala.
The doctors were around me in their white coats.

Theannaich i an còta-taighe mun cuairt oirre.
She tightened the house-coat about her.

4. mun cuairt do (prep.)

This is an alternative form of 'mun cuairt air', but doesn't seem to be so common.

Bha e a' feuchainn ri aghaidh fhalach on fheadhainn a bha mun cuairt dha.
He was trying to hide his face from those about him.

Tha a' mhuir mun cuairt do'n eilean seo gu math nas fhuaire na tha na h-uisgeachan aig an taigh.
The sea about this island is colder than the waters at home are.

More next time.
