Tip of the Week 33
Here are some more male first names. As before, the pronunciation guide is:
ch - always as in 'loch'
tch - always as in 'church'
uh - a very short sound
gh - as described in
Tip of the Week 31 The vocative Case 1.
A few names have the last vowel in 'ea'. These are changed in two different
ways when the 'i' is introduced in the Vocative Case.
Cailean [pr. callan] a Chailein [pr. uh challin] Colin
Ailean [pr. allan] Ailein [pr. allin] Allan, Alan etc.
Ùisdean [pr. oosh-jan] Ùisdein [pr. oosh-jin] Hugh
Uilleam [pr. ooilyum] Uilleim [pr. ooilyim] William
The next two are more slenderised:
Coinneach [pr. coen-yuch] a Choinnich [pr. uh choen-yich] Kenneth
Mìcheal [pr. mi-chull] a Mhìcheil [pr. uh vich-ill or uh vich-yill]
Michael
Some have this name always slenderised i.e. Mìcheil, a Mhìcheil.
A rather more pronounced change takes place in:
Niall [pr. n-yee-ul] a Nèill [pr. uh n-yell] or a Nìll [pr. uh nyeel]
Neal, Neil
More next time.
Cailean
