Tip of the Week 21
Is cuimhne leam = I remember
This expression employs the assertive verb *is* and the preposition *le*
or its prepositional pronouns. It literally means "It is a memory
/recollection with me."
It does not require *air* at all, but is rather more limited in its use in
some ways, always being followed (or preceded in some cases) by a noun or
pronoun (which may themselves be qualified in some way.)
Is cuimhne leam a' chlann a' cluich air an tràigh seo.
I remember the children playing on this beach.
An cuimhne leat na h-amannan sin?
Do you remember those times?
Cha chuimhne leam fhèin ach bu chuimhne leis na bodaich na
daoine ud.
I myself don't remember, but the old men would remember those people.
A useful phrase is:
.... mas cuimhne leibh ... if you recall /recollect.
More next time
