Personal security on the internet is a great concern for me. Anyone can easily steal another's identity over the internet.

As you surf the internet, the verios web pages you visit leave what are known as cookies on your computer. These are small files that are temporarily saved to your computer's hard drive. These often provide companies with important information, such as your name, your last visit to their page, and if you had bought anything.

Consequently, some people can uses cookies and CGI programs to learn about your personal information. A CGI program is a program on the internet that gathers information from cookies and writes information in the form of cookies. Soeone could use one of these CGI program s to take your identity, such as a credit card number you may have entered in a website to make an online-purchase.

Also, you often don't have to do anything more than just go to a page to be "caught." As you surf the net, your computer brodacasts an IP Address. This is a uniqe series of numbers that identify your computer (and you) on the internet. This is one way that police and FBI officials have tracked down people who visit child pronography webpages.

I encourage you to make sure you only visit webpages that do not collect your personal information. Even if the webpage and its creators and administrators do not use this information, someone else could.
