The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [WWF Royal Rumble]
Ugh. Yokozuna, Tatanka, Crush and Lex Luger. Man were they stupid.

RoYaL RuMbLe!!!

WWF Royal Rumble was a high quality wrestling game when it first came out, for both the SNES and the Sega. In my opinion, the SNES version is better because it features more entertaining wrestlers. While the Sega version does have Hulk Hogan, it also has I.R.S., Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Papa Shango, and other wrestlers I don't care about. Unfortunately, SNES also has a host of scabs I would rather forget, but I really like Bret Hart, Mr. Perfect, and Ted DiBiase.

The best feature of the game is the 'Royal Rumble' mode, where all the wrestlers duke it out and try to win the match by throwing other wrestlers out of the ring and being the last one inside the ropes. The Royal Rumble feature would most often include 6 wrestlers in the ring at the same time, and yet the gameplay did not seem to suffer at all.

Other cool features in this game included the wrestlers special moves. There was a drawback to this though, as no special move could include a pin, and there was no submissions so a submission move was basically worthless.

Another cool aspect is that this was one of the first games to include a steel chair, and have it be easily usable. The best part of this game takes place inside the ring though, when the referee gets bumped and goes down. Quite innovative for back in the day.

WWF Royal Rumble
Graphics: 5.5
These graphics are quite lame. The wresltlers all basically look exactly alike. I mean, even Yokozuna, who weighs 550 pounds, looks similar to everyone else. At least Ted DiBiase has a beard. Also, if you squint real hard you can make out the razors on Razor Ramon's trunks. Oh wait, no you can't. For Sega, this game comes up well short of expected for the graphics category.
Playability: 8.5
Royal Rumble is pretty cool, basically you just rack on the buttons and worry about moves, strategy, and other things later. If you hit the buttons fast enough then everything else works itself out. The only bad thing I can think about this is that you can get carpel tunnel from playing this game too much, and your friends get ticked and don't want to play with you anymore if you consistenly prove your superior thumbspeed by hucking their sorry carcasses over the top rope.
Fun Factor: 4.5
The Royal Rumble mode is really really cool, this game is fairly entertaining in multi-player mode, playing with Mr. Perfect and Ted DiBiase is really sweet, but the replay value of the game is darn near 0. This is a nice game that takes about 3 minutes to master, and even less time to get tired of. Oh well, it was fun when it came out.
