The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [Wrestlemania]
I Am A Real American!...

Snap Into A Slim Jim!

Wrestle Mania! The biggest event in the world of wrestling. The Super Bowl of wrestling. In the sacred grounds of Wrestle Mania legends are made of the warriors of the squared circle. To be in the main event of Wrestle Mania is the absolute highest peak of the profession of being a pro wrestler. and guess whatin this game you can live it! . Well sort of, in a really crappy way.

There are two modes of play in Wrestle Mania. Standard, which can be played with one player versus the computer or another player, and its just a single match. Tournament which can be played with up to six, countem! Six human players! The only way to get the world title is to play in the tournament mode. After youve selected how you want to play, you get to enter your name in! How cool is that?

Then its on to the character selection screen. There are 6 wrestlers to pick from, and it really isnt a bad list to choose from. The great Macho Man Randy Savage, Andre The Giant, The very fat Bam Bam Bigelow, That prayer sayin' vitamin eating Hulk Hogan, The greatest intercontinental champion ever in the Honky Tonk Man, and last but not least the unforgettable Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase.

Once you choose your character, its on to the ring! If you chose tournament mode you have to face the 5 remaining characters in your quest for the Champeenship. Sadly there arent really any real wrestling moves in this game. Every character has a punch, and a kick. and thats pretty much what the game play is. It gets repetitive faster then a hobo can finish a fifth of whisky. There are also drop kicks type moves that can be pulled out, they seem really out of place. I have never once in my life seen Hulk Hogan perform a drop kick, but in this game he pulls them out like he was a Ninja Turtle fighting a foot soldier. You can also climb the two bottom turnbuckles, and jump from them in an attempt to hit your opponent. Like the rest of the actions in the game its clumsy and awkward. While the matches go on, these little power ups go across the top of the ring. They have different little designs for each character, Honky Tonk Man has a guitar and Bam Bam has his Flames etc., If you move your character over their power up they get a few more bars up on their power meter, pretty ho hum.

Wrestle Mania may seem sort of simple and crappy, well it is. That doesnt mean it isnt kind of hard however. The computer tends to cheat like a bastard. The most dangerous position you can find your self in, is for some reason behind your opponent. The computer can hit you with back elbows so fast that it would make Bruce Lee spin in his grave. When the computer gets determined it can hit you with furious flurries of punches and kicks, followed up with drop kicks that are pretty much indefensible and that made me very angry at times while playing this game.

If there is one sort of redeeming quality about this game, its the sound. The tunes of the wrestlers theme songs are rather catchy, and they play thru out the matches. That alone really couldnt make this a good game. It was a horrible effort overall. There were much better wrestling games for the NES, with actual wrestling moves in them.

I can remember getting this game on my birthday when I was a little kid. I got to go to the local Toys R Us and pick it out. Once I saw Hulk Hogan on the cover I knew I had to have it. I had never played it, but it was Wrestle Mania! It had to be good, it just had to be! Once I got it home, and played it for a little while I got an empty feeling in my stomach once I realized I had picked one horrible game. Then I promptly lied to my self and told my self that it wasnt that bad and that it was kind of fun. After Playing thru this game and winning that Champeenship Title Belt with the late Andre The Giant with the pin over that greedy red and gold bastard Hulk Hogan. I have that same empty feeling inside, except now I dont have to lie to my self (about this game at least) like I did when I was a child who could have picked a good game at that Toys R Us on my birthday so long ago. This Game Sucks. The only way possible I can recommend playing this game would be if youre a huge wrestling fan, and can remember the 80s. There may only be six 6 wrestlers on the roster but they are classics. Other wise stay away. for the love of food. stay away.

Wrestlemania
Graphics: 3
The graphics are not that good, but at least you can clearly tell which wrestler is which. That counts for something right?
Playability: 2
The game has awkward controls added with the lack of what you can actually do in this game makes a horrible result.
Fun Factor: 2
Its kind of neat to see the old wrestlers in a game way back in their primes. Even though the game gets old so fast, its fun for a match or two I guess.
