The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [Toe Jam and Earl]
Earl is a weiner

Toe Jam is a peanut

All I can say about the storyline of this game is that whoever came up with the concept of this game had to have been tripping on some really really good drugs. You control two funky aliens, Toejam and Earl. They are flying around in their funky spaceship and listening to some extra funky beats when Toejam decides to let his fat idiot friend Earl drive the spaceship.

Of course Earl quickly loses control of the vessel and they crash into Earthonly this isnt the Earth you and I know. On this Earth you begin on the first floor of a world filled with carrotmen, nerd herds, vicious mailboxes, insane dentists, boogey men, and present stealing moles.

You can go up to the next floor by traveling in a cleverly placed elevator somewhere on each level. The whole point of the game is to find pieces of your spaceship so you can travel back to your home planet. To aid you in this seemingly impossible mission, you will have many contraptions at your disposal, such as icarus wings, bonus hi-tops, tomato slingshots, and rocket skates.

Graphics: 7
Surprisingly, the graphics for this game have withstood the test of time quite well. Being a first generation Genesis game it cant compare to later developments like Booger man, but T&E sports sharp, colorful textures and the game runs quite smoothly.almost like butta. The graphics go a bit on the simple side during elevator scenes where the entire background is one color and a bunch of one-dimensional triangles and the transition from one screen to split screen in 2 player mode is a little clumsy, but these minor complains dont detract from the overall graphical experience.
Playability: 6
This game is hella fun with one person or two. Of course, in two player mode both players will constantly fight over who gets to be Toejam. His clinically obese and clumsy bro Earl is much slower and a pain in the arse to use. If you do get stuck with Earl then prepare for a barrage of insults as your partner sits in the elevator and waits for your fat self to rumble in. It tends to get a bit degrading after a while. Other than that though the controls are on the money.
Fun Factor: 9
This is hands down the funnest (yeah, its a word) adventure game Ive ever played for the Sega Genesis. Even today I find myself playing through it once a week. The fact that the levels are randomly generated and you never know what kind of presents you can find gives it incredible replay value. I remember a lot of games for the Genesis that were cool to play back in the day but they are bland, repetitive, and boring nowadays. That is not the case at all for Toejam and Earl. If you still have a Genesis, I suggest you pull it out of the garage, dust it off, and throw in this game right now.
