The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [Streets of Rage 2]
Where is the little guy with the roller blades?

I miss mohawks

The second installment of the popular Genesis beat em up series is vastly superior to the first game in every way. The story, like most fighting games, is pretty ridiculous. Some dork who goes by the name Mr. X comes back from the dead and kidnaps some random guy and you have to save him.

Mr. X isnt about to go through with this stupid plan alone though. He will need the help of his 800 and some cronies that go by about 8 different names. The biggest change from the first game is when you press the A button to execute your special move, you actually do have a special move. If anybody remembers the first game, when you press A the action takes a 10 second break where the camera pans left and a police car drives up and shoots a missle where everyone is fighting.

This would cause a large explosion and every enemy on the screen would get thwacked while the hero would sit there unharmed. Personally, I think this was a change for the better. The music on this game was excellent too. The techno beats in the background were way ahead of their time.

Streets of Rage 2
Graphics: 6
Although the graphics were greatly improved from the first game, they still couldnt stand next to the competition at the time (Final Fight for SNES). In the first game the characters were small and blocky and they are bigger and much more defined in SoR2. The graphics are sometimes underrated because the game is so overshadowed by Final Fight but I think they get the job done.
Playability: 8
Here is where this game competes with the big boys. This game has more moves than most fighting games and they can be executed with great ease. Dont you hate games where you need to hit a combo of like 4 buttons just so you can perform your persons special move? Well, you wont have that problem in this game because all you need to do is press A. Could it be any more simple?
Fun Factor: 3
This game is sweet for the first 10 or 15 minutes, but after that it gets really old. Why is that do you ask? Like most beat em ups this game gets really repetitive. Your only incentive to keep playing is either so you can finally finish the game or so you can see what the next boss looks like. Granted the backgrounds change and you can find a few new weapons or items but other than that it is the same thing level after level. Playing 2 player is more fun as long as you find a way to stay out of your teammate's way. Otherwise prepare to beat the crap out of each other until you are out of continues.
