Rollin on A River
Alex and Ryan, a couple of do-gooders from the pleasant town of River City, wake up one day to find their city overrun with a bunch of gangs like the Squids, the Cowboys, and the Internationals. To make matters worse, Ryans girlfriend has been kidnapped by the gang overlord guy, Spike. Instead of reasoning with these troubled teens or forcing them onto humiliating talk shows, the two decide to settle this like menso they beat the crap out of everybody in sight. Ah, the good old days of high school, when all of lifes problems could be settled by fisticuffs. Anyways, this game is a lot like Double Dragon or Bad Dudes, except instead of just beating up everything in sight there is dialogue and other role-play elements.
| | River City Ransom | Graphics: 5 The graphics are rather impressive for an NES game. Even though the characters are slightly deformed, each person has distinctive facial features. People can also make noticeable facial expressions when they are happy, sad, or in pain. Most Nintendo games cannot even claim to have faces on their characters, much less distinctive features and facial expressions. The background graphics are anything but repetitive. Any time you leave a screen you enter a completely different area of the city where you can find rivers, malls, a school, construction areas a warehouse, a park and garbage pickups. |
Playability: 10
This game is pretty easy to get into but of course there is only 2 buttons on an NES controller. The controls are very responsive, which is nice because fighting games can get pretty frustrating at times. Everything in this game works so well that Id say my only real gripe is that there are so many possible actions that a few more buttons would have been nice. Then you wouldnt have to hit both buttons together in order to jump and you wouldnt have to tap a direction twice in order to run. Once you get over this pitfall control wont be an issue. |
Fun Factor: 8 This game can be played with one or two people. One player mode might be a little more practical though, for basically one reason. Itll be fun at first, until one person accidentally smacks the other person. At this point, say goodbye to saving River City because you will spend the next 45 minutes fighting each other. Ive never played a game where this hasnt happened so just trust me on this. Even if you somehow make a pact, it will get broken because accidents do happen. If you accidentally hit your friend, it would only be fair if he hits you back, and so on. When you feel like progressing in the game, play it alone and you will enjoy it. Going to the mall has never been so fun. You can save up for new moves, some food to restore your health, or even a new pair of boots! Dont go to the spa though, unless you enjoy staring at your character naked.no joke. |
