The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [Perfect Dark]

Goldeneye 007 1/2, the sequel!

The story behind this game is that it was supposed to be a direct sequel to the colossal Goldeneye 007 but the games developer Rare lost the license to EA. Instead, Rare created a pseudo sequel entitled Perfect Dark with a female main character, Joanna. The game took everything that made Goldeneye great, along with countless innovations and improvements. Instead of 12 weapons there are over 40. There are 3 times more multi-player arenas and the game has better graphics thanks to the N64 expansion pack. Another improvement is actual voice acting, which was something Goldeneye really lacked (if anyone remembers it just had scrolling text).

Perfect Dark
Graphics: 10
The game really takes advantage of the expansion pack. The textures are smoother than a babys bottom and the environments are much more colorful and detailed than those seen in Goldeneye. If there was a game that took the N64 to its graphical limit, this is it along with Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I still think this game competes with the newest games out there as far as graphics go.
Playability: 8
One huge playability improvement over Goldeneye is that added feature where you can see all your items by holding down on the A button. In Goldeneye you had to cycle through your items to get the one you wanted or you had to pause the game. This feature is especially handy in multi-player battles where time is of the essence. I do, however, have a slightly large complaint about the playability of this game. The framerate with more than one person playing can at times, get pretty choppy. This makes the multi-player mode frustrating and almost annoying at times. This isnt to say the multi-player mode sucks, but I would take Goldeneye over it on my impatient days. If that problem didnt exist, this would probably be the perfect game.
Fun Factor: 9
Id really like to give this game a 10, but the choppiness in high traffic multi-player situations is the reason it didnt make it. Everything else I love about this game. There are so many different things to do it would take hundreds of hours to do everything. Once the missions are beaten on all three difficulty levels there are the 30 arena challenges which need to be beaten with 1, 2, 3 and 4 players. After that you can beat the missions on cooperative mode on every difficulty, and then go to the weapons range and win the bronze, silver and gold with every weapon in the game. Once you have done that you can go back to the arena and play any variety of opponents, levels, weapon combinations, and game rules imaginable. There are probably over a billion different possibilities, and it keeps track of all your statistics and ranking as well. God I love this game, and you should to. If you have an N64, you must buy this game.
