Waaaaaaaluigi!
Well, it looks like Mario got sick of saving that dumb broad Peach and his go-cart broke down, so instead of lounging around and eating all the spaghetti, he organized a tennis tournament.
Once again, many of his friends like Luigi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Wario and Yoshi will make an appearance, along with some new faces like Waluigi (Warios brother). Just like ever other Mario game, characters have their strengths and weaknesses.
Tennis can be played with 1-4 players in a variety of arenas. Other than just regular tennis, there are ring games, some pirhana game and a tennis arena that moves with power-ups like turtle shells and lightning. So much to do, so little time.
| | Mario Tennis | Graphics: 9 For a cartoony game like this, I dont know if I could ask for better graphics. The characters are well designed in full 3D and the Grass court looks awesome. I play on the court just so I can stare at the beautifully done grass. Of course there are games out today with better and more complex graphics, but this game was meant to be rather simple. Playing this game is so soothing on the eyes I can only describe it as therapeutic. |

I love how Nintendo games are so simple, yet difficult to master. Mario Tennis is a perfect example of this. There are really only 2 buttons used in this game, one to put forward spin on the ball and one to put backspin on the ball. There are many combinations of these buttons that provide different shots though, and the key is timing and placement. This game plays like a dream, with no frame-rate problems whatsoever. I guess the only thing keeping it from a 10 are the rare occurrences where something doesnt go your way and you feel like it wasnt your fault. There is no way that ball was out you _____ ______ _____ ____! or What the _____ _____ ____ is my guy doing? I hit that ball! If you ever played this game, youd know what I mean. |
Fun Factor: 8 Games like this are what make the N64 the best multi-player machine, period. If you have a 64, you have a party. Mario Tennis is hella fun to play with a few buddies. It is a low maintenance game as well, meaning there arent any loading times or much preparation that goes into playing it. The game is fast-paced and short in duration. If you only have ten minutes before you have to go to work, you can throw it in and get a few good games before you have to leave. The poverty of time issue we all have as fast-paced Americans makes this game fit well into our schedules. I do have one gripe about it, however. The doubles cup can only be played one player and I think two people should be able to cooperatively play it. Other than that, this game is mucho excellente. |
