The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [Ice Hockey]
Those Fat Guys Rule!

Is There Anyway to Skip the Zambonis?

The game of Ice Hockey is one of the only pre-NHL series hockey games that is worthwhile. Like most Nintendo games, its simplicity is key. Early in video game history it seems that the more simple a game is the better chance it has at being entertaining.

The game has few options, the most important being that you are able to choose which style of players you want on your team. Your choices are between: a slow, hard-checking and slapshooting fat guy, a skinny, fast, and weak guy, and then a piece of trash guy who is average in all categories and really can't do crap. The only other option you really have in the game is to pick your team. You can choose between a few different countries, but really all this does is change your team's color. Its kind of dissapointing that the U.S. is sky blue and not the high quality color scheme they used in the '80 miracle on ice.

Ice Hockey
Graphics: 2
The most detailed graphical effect might be the font on the scoreboard. It lookes like New York Times or something. The graphics are fairly poor even for Nintendo, but the detailed noses on the fat guys almost made me give this game a 3.
Playability: 6
Its almost impossible to win a fight with the computer when they fight back, and if you try you get sent to the penalty box. Another annoying factor is that you control the goalie as you play defense. If you want to skate your defender up, your goalie will also move up. This does not bode well as many times while chasing around the puck your goalie becomes hopelessly out of position and your opponent gets an easy goal.
Fun Factor: 5.5
A season mode with statistics would have been key. This game gets old quick against the computer, however the game does have varius speeds to play the game at. This way when you get bored of pummeling the CPU you can do it at a faster pace. The game is still fun with 2-players, however an CPU with half of an artificial intelligence would have been nice. All in all a pretty decent game.
