The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [Gran Tourismo]
Aston/Martin?

Ahhh the Twin Turbo...

In my opinion, Gran Tourismo is the best racing game ever. The arcade mode is not all that entertaining after awhile, but the simulation mode is really where its at.

In Gran Tourismo, you begin with a lousy car and work your way up by winning races and money. Where the game really sets itself apart is in the challenge of the races, and the vast array of cars that are available for purchase and upgrade.

The racing aspect of the game is quite difficult as it stresses realism. With the high powered engines, turning a corner too sharp or accelerating at innapropriate times can have dire consequences. This game stresses patience. The more you slow down and execute a turn efficiently, the better you will do (until you soup up a Mitsubishi Twin Turbo GT to over 900 horse power and then you can just hold down the accelerator and ride the wall). The game is difficult to beat as your opponent's cars continue to get faster as you climb the ladder. Also, there are many different levels that can be completed, yet you are not allowed access to them until you gain the appropriate liscense.

The vast array of cars that are available for purchase really motivates the greed in you and makes you strive to win races and get money. There are more cars in this game then you can ever hope to own, many of them very pretty and shiny.

Gran Tourismo
Graphics: 10
The graphics in this game may be slightly worse than the graphics in the later sequels, however the breathtaking scenery and the shiny cars really took my breath away when I first played this game. Hence the reason why I call them breathtaking. The background is beautiful as you race to the setting sun and the shadows through the trees. The graphics really make the game a joy to play.
Playability: 6
Although the gameplay is very consistent and I don't think you can honestly say that at any point you feel like you were treated unfairly by the CPU, the extent to which you slide or spin sometimes seems slightly exaggerated. Nothing is more frusterating than spinning out, and then in an effort to catch up you step on the gas with a little too much gusto and immediately spin out again. They could have been a little more lenient in that aspect.
Fun Factor: 9
This is a fantastic game. It stays fun for a long long time even after the CPU becomes less of a challenge. Racing the CPU with a vastly inferior car can also keep the game a challenge. The amount of cars and the way they actually handle differently due to the make and model really give the game a superb realism. I think this definitely goes in my top 5 games of all time.
